On my Windows XP when I start & try to visit a site I'm redirected to Vuwl. Have been reading the things I should do but....

Don't have a CD-rom (this computer was owned by one of my children but I think the disc was lost in a house move) so cannot backup

Tried to enable Firewall in safe mode-got this message "Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows firewall /Int conn sharing." When I hit Yes I got "Windows cannot start the windows ics service".

Have run Malwarebytes & scan in safe mode & run MRT but came up with nothing

Have since had message Malwarebytes successfully blocked access to a potential malicious website: 78.140.161.61 Type: outgoing

Also had "plugin.container.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close etc Error report contains AppName: plugin-container.exe AppVer: 1.9.2.4280 Mod Name: ntdll.dll ModVer 5.1.2600.6055 Offset: 0000100b

Don't know if all this is any help!

Welcome aboard Posted Image

Which browser is getting redirected?

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Thanks for your quick reply. I've done as you suggested but got to a point where I need to wait for your advice again.

I use Mozilla Firefox/Google browser but within the last couple of days have got Avanquest. The problems seem to be when I use Mozilla. Reason is that I tried Mozilla today & was redirected but my system picked up a problem site which was http frtraffic.com/tds/in.cgs?3

Below are the Security check, MiniToolBox & Malwarebytes results. When I tried the GMER all I got was "The connection was reset while the page was loading"

I use Mozilla Firefox/Google browser but within the last couple of days have got Avanquest

I'm not sure what you're saying.

Can you check if IE is redirected as well?

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

What I was trying to say was that because I've been having problems with Mozilla Firefox I looked at others & must have got Avanquest by doing it. IE isn't being redirected.

I'm not sure what Avanquest product you're referring to.

If you're using Firefox 3.x, close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode).
If you're using Firefox 4, or higher go Help>Restart Firefox with Add-ons Disabled.
Same issue?

Mine is Firefox 3.6 & I have followed the instructions you posted but in Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode) it seems that I'm still getting redirect issues

Until a couple of days ago I used Mozilla Firefox for my browser & it went to Google (where I was first redirected to Vuwl) but now if goes to Avanquest instead. I have inadvertantly caused this to happen.

I also have this below if it's any use from an hour ago. It was before I went into Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode). I was using Avanquest at the time

With the information you have provided I believe you will need help from the malware removal team.
Please make sure that you read the information about getting started first.
Then start a new thread HERE and include or required logs.
Including a link to this thread will be helpful.

Good luck and be patient. Help is on the way!

Hello,

I found your new topic here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic425681.html but I see that you haven't posted the DDS or GMER logs. Please do so in a reply to your topic there. If you are unable to produce them, explain what happens when you try to create them in a reply to that topic.

What about the DDS logs? If you don't know what I'm talking about, please go back to the prep. guide and read step 7.

Hello,

1) In a reply to your new topic, please explain what happened when you tried to create the DDS logs.

2) The DDS log should begin with something like this:

DDS (Ver_2011-08-26.01) - FAT32x86
Internet Explorer: 5.00.3700.1000 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_29

If that is what you see, copy and paste the log into the post area in that same reply.

3) Did you save the other DDS log? If so, right click on the file name and click on "rename". Change it to attach.txt Open it and make sure it begins with text something like this:

.

UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.
IF REQUESTED, ZIP IT UP & ATTACH IT
.
DDS (Ver_2011-08-26.01)
.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Boot Device: \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1
Install Date:
System Uptime: (980268 hours ago)

if it does, attach it to the same reply and explain that you renamed the file. There is no need to zip it.
