Posted 28 October 2011 - 01:12 AM

I am running Win 7 64x on a Core i7 920 processor system. I boot from an 80 gb SSD drive, but my user files and all my data are on a separate traditional hard drive. I have Secunia running in the background, as well as Win 7's built in firewall. For the last several years, I've been running Avira Antivir, but in the last week, I switched to MSE.

I have never had malware issues until about 2 weeks ago. My wife and I noticed that the computer seemed to stutter when typing, then catch up. Also, randomly when scrolling, the system would suddenly freeze, allowing the cursor error to pass by it, then catch up after a second. Both symptoms would happen every few seconds on a variety of programs. I suspected a virus, and ran several scanners, starting with the virus scanner built into Avira Antivir free, which immediately found several viruses that I then removed (forgive me, I did not write down their names). I then ran Spybot SD, which found several more malware programs, which I removed (again, I did not write down the names of the malware finds), then I ran Malware Bytes, which also found culprits, which I removed.

After this, the stuttering stopped. I rarely use Internet Explorer, preferring Firefox, but a few days later, I mistakenly clicked on Internet Explorer (version 9), which to my surprise just showed a blank, white screen without status bars or anything. No matter what I did, the screen seemed frozen. Then, after a minute or two, my home page would finally show up. If I opened another tab, however, the blank screen would pop up again, and IE would freeze. Sometimes in the address window, I'd see "about:blank", which I learned is the name of a kind of malware. I tried various programs to solve this problem, but I only botched things up worse.

Finally, I used Acronis True Image Home 2009 to restore an earlier version of my C drive (I restored the SSD only). I then ran MSE's virus scanner, Spybot SD, and rkill, Malware Bytes, and finally SuperAntiSpyware Free edition. Since then, my system seems to be working well - no stuttering and IE works fast and without the blank screen - BUT every time I start up the system, 3 Search warning balloons, one after the other, briefly appear at the lower left system tray telling me that a program (not identified) is trying to change my search options, but was blocked. This makes me suspect that my computer remains infected.

I am writing now to ask if you folks might be able to help me discover what's going on and remedy it.

I have attached both a DDS attach.txt file and my hijackthis.log file.

Following is my DSS.txt file. Thanks in advance:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/425394 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Here is my reply to the Helpbot email:

1. I left a detailed description of my problem in the opening email to this thread. Nothing has changed since I first left that message.

2. Below is a new DDS log (I have also attached "Attach.txt"). Please note that I cannot leave a GMER log, as I am running on Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit, with Service Pack 1.

3. Yes, I have my original windows DVD available if needed.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • alternate download link 2
    • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
    • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:[list]
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hey, Nasdaq,

Thanks for your help. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. Unfortunately, the problem still persists: at startup, Windows gives me three little bubbles in the lower right corner of the screen, one after the other, each one telling me that a program has been blocked from trying to change my search settings. In any case, please find attached all three logs: the mbam log, the ComboFix log, and the checkup log (I renamed the latter two files, adding dates in them for future reference). Below, please find the pasted results from the mbam log...

Nasdaq,

Per your instructions, I installed the Flash Player, then created the CFScript file with Notepad, and dragged it to Combofix to execute it.

After Combofix went through it's cycle, made it's changes, rebooted the computer and created it's log fie (attached here, by the way), I rebooted the computer again. And guess what? The warning bubbles that have been appearing on my computer, telling me that a program was blocked from changing my search options has disappeared! I think you solved my problem. Thank you!

And thank you again!

Nasdaq,

I'm afraid there is now one NEW problem: PDFCreator no longer works. When I try to print to a .pdf using that program, nothing happens: the PDFCreator engine doesn't work. Any thoughts about how I might be able to solve this?

Note: several weeks ago, before working with you, I ran Combofix on my own to try to solve the problem you've been helping me with. At that time, the same thing happened: PDFCreator stopped working. I tried uninstalling it, then reinstalling it, but still it failed to work. Finally, I used last month's Acronis True Image backup to restore an older version of my hard drive. That solved the PDFCreator problem -- it worked just fine -- but the warning bubbles remained.

Thanks again for your help,

PGLA

Pdfforge Toolbar installed with PDFCreator - detected by Sophos, McAfee, Malwarebyte's Antimalware and others as "Adware.WidgiToolbar"

but the warning bubbles remained.

If you right click on the bubbles do you get to know why/where they come from?

Nasdaq,

Got your message. Let me answer the last point first: Because your malware removal procedure worked so well, the bubbles no longer appear, so I can't click on them to discover their identity. But before, when they did appear, they came and went so quickly, I could never seem to click on them before they were gone. The good news is, the problem seems to be solved.

On the other hand, and this addresses your first note, I now have no way of creating .pdf files. The program PDFCreator, which I've used for years, is still installed in my system, but if I try to print to its printer driver, nothing happens. Because this same problem happened when I tried to use ComboFix a few weeks ago, and then happened again when I ran Combofix yesterday with the script you sent me, I'm guessing that ComboFix changed registry settings that not only removed the PDFCreator tool bar (which is a good thing), but have also removed PDFCreator's ability to make PDF files (which is a not-so-good thing). I'm glad to get rid of the tool bar, which I must have inadvertently installed (there's an option to install the toolbar when installing the program, but I usually decline it), but I need the printer driver, as it's my only way to create .pdf files from internet pages, MSWord documents, etc. I've been using the program for years, and it's never given me trouble. I tried uninstalling PDFCreator, then reinstalling it, but I'm still unable to print to .pdf files. Is there a way of getting just THAT part of the program back?

Thanks,

PGLA

This will dequarantine the pdfforge folder remove by my script.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

Save this as CFScript on your desktop.

Nasdaq,

Turns out I was able to uninstall PDFCreator, then reinstall WITHOUT the toolbar. I now have PDFCreator's print-to-PDF function working. but without the worrisome malware issues. I may be wrong, but I think the problem is now solved.

Thanks again for your help,

PGLA
