I caught Security Sphere 2012. I tried using this site's walkthrough, but could not get TDSSKiller to run (I get an error that says "[t]he application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application"). I was able to follow some walkthrough on youtube to remove the annoying fake anti-virus, but I still get browser redirects and my computer runs slow as soon as I open a browser. I tried running another program from Symantec, which had me remove my restore points, but it did not work either. Instead my computer went into a reboot loop and would only go into regular safemode or Windows if I agreed to try to restore my past session. I run Windows XP.

I can't attach the ark.txt file from Gmer. When I tried to run Gmer, I got an error that says "Load Driver ("C:\DOCUME~1\MICHAE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\fgtdypow.sys" 0xC00000 10E: Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key." I have copied the ark.txt below after the dds log. I was still able to run Gmer, but it would not let me check boxes of where to search and only let me search "Services," "Registry," "Files," "C:\," and "ADS."

I suspect I may have caused more harm by my half-measure meddling.

The dds log is below.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

I have AVG. I tried taking it off using add/remove programs as I could not figure out how to disable it (right clicking on the icon in the system tray and scrolling through the items on the list does not lead to a prompt as suggested in the link you gave; nor does opening it and clicking around the toolbar at the top provide any solution). After rebooting, I was surprised to see the AVG icon both on my desktop and the system tray (although now with a warning sign in the system tray icon and when opened advising me that my computer is at risk).

I dloaded and ran ComboFix. I got an error. I says "You cannot rename ComboFix as ComboFix(2) Please use another name, preferably made up of alphanumeric characters." And after clicking OK ComboFix disappeared completely. Then I got a popup from AVG asking if I wanted to run it. So ComboFix stopped running and AVG is still running somehow in the background like a ghost despite my attempt to remove it.

Hi

If you see any icons for combofix on your desktop > right click and delete them

Use the following Appremover to completely remove AVG

Please download AppRemover and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on AppRemover.exe to run it.
  • Uncheck "Enable anonymous usage statistics. No personal data will be recorded."
  • Click on the Next button.
  • Click on "Remove Security Application" or "Clean Up a Failed Uninstall" depending on what you want to do. (you want the failed uninstall)
  • Click on the Next button.
  • A scan begins, please wait. Once done, click on the Next button.
  • Now you should have a list of your installed programs, choose the one you want to remove and click on the Next button.
  • Follow the last step and reboot if asked to do so.

Now download a fresh copy of ComboFix but rename it to svchost.exe before saving it > also, save it directly to your c:\ drive

Now navigate to your C:\ drive and run ComboFix > give it lots of time to complete

Please post the resulting logs

I ran AppRemover (twice). It seems to have worked at removing AVG though I had issues rebooting. I dloaded ComboFix again from InfoSpyware, renamed it, and put it in the C drive. I ran ComboFix. It said the version of ComboFix I had was old, then it asked if I wanted to run a reduced scan or exit the program. I clicked "OK" on running a reduced scan as I hoped it would do more than the other option of shutting the program down. It did nothing else except vanish the svchost.exe file from the C drive and create a new folder in the C drive called ComboFix. The new folder contains a file called CF21047.3XE and the .3XE has the icon of a command prompt in DOS.

Hi,

Log(s) finally attached. While running ComboFix it stated "You are infected with Rootkit.ZeroAccess! It has inserted itself into the tcp/ip stack. This is a particularly difficult insertion. If for any reason you're unable to connect to the internet after running ComboFix, reboot once and see if that fixes it."

I have not run ComboFix again. Should I?

I forgot to add that at the end it stated "If it's not fixed, run ComboFix one more time" which is why I asked if I should run it again.

Hi,

Those instructions were only if you couldn't connect to the internet after running ComboFix,

Please do the following:

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.
  • They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Copy/paste the text inside the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Copy all the text inside of the code box - Press Ctrl+C (or right click on the highlighted section and choose 'copy')

Folder::
c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB6317$

ClearJavaCache::

Now paste the copied text into the open notepad - press CTRL+V (or right click and choose 'paste')

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:

1.Click File;
2.Click Save As... Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save ...

Posted Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix may request an update; please allow it.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

The log is attached.

Oddly, I left the computer on since the last reply and Outlook had tried to install. In addition, there is a new semi-hidden file on the desktop called htfrblavow.tmb (semi-hidden in the sense that you can see it like when you unhide files whose icons then appear dim in various folders whereas before when they were hidden you could not see them). I sent this file to the recycle bin and rebooted, but it has reappeared on the desktop.
