Very trying my better half says!

Having spent the last hour browsing the site I reckon I have a lot to learn before I even think about posting.

Thanks John

I am actually trying to sort a friends computer, he has been running without any form of protection for nearly 6 months. I seem to be sinking deeper into the mire instead of helping though

I can sympathize with you. Start with an anti-virus, then proceed to anti-spyware applications. Once any problems are more or less resolved, then clean up temporary files, etc., run checkdisk and defrag.
If there are still problems, consider posting a HJT log for some expert help from our team of volunteers:
