OK. I've come across a new problem (only a few weeks old) but it happens on both my laptop and desktop. Here's the problem description.

Whenever I try to save an office file (either .docx, .xlsx, etc.) it takes several seconds (like 10 or more) to save them. During that time, the computer is unresponsive. Before, I was able to save a good sized office file in less than 3 seconds.

This problem also seems to appear in Firefox....there is a noticeable delay when opening the browser, switching tabs or selecting a link on a website. The problem is not as bad as office, but it frequently occurs.

After the hangup, the computer responds normally. I have no viruses and other than these quirks, the machines run fast.

The strange thing is that it happens on 2 different computers with different programs on them.

Computer #1
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit, 3 GB RAM
MS Office Pro 2007, SP2
Avira Antivirus Premium 2012
Zonealarm Pro Firewall

Computer #2
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, 4 GB RAM
MS Office Pro 2010, SP1
Bitdefender Antivirus 2012
Comodo Firewall

As you can see, I have different versions of Office, different firewalls and different Antivirus on each computer.
Maybe this issue was caused by a recent Windows Update or an Office Update common to both 2007 & 2010.

Any ideas?

Thanks. :thumbup2:

My question was going to be similar. Why are you simply not using Windows firewall?

Have you tried it in safe mode and does it work correctly there?
In the beginning there was the command line.

Found the problem, actually. :clapping:

It happens to be my thumb drive. Whenever I try to save office files on my thumb drive, I get the hangup. But it's fine on my main hard drive. I also tried it on a WD External drive and there were no hangups.
I guess I'll need to replace my flash drive....it appears OK, but only slow when I save files.

As for the unresponsive Firefox, I don't know....maybe a bug in the code. I use FF 7.0.1.

Happy computing! :busy:
