Hi there,
So I'm having the same problem as this guy below, but I couldn't find the solution to his problem:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic319722.html

Basically, my McAfee antivirus is disabled, my internet is disabled, my USB port is disabled, My Taskbar is an ancient NT style "grey", and I can't seem to do much other than open my photos and word files. I also haven't received any of those "your computer is infected" notifications as I've seen with other viruses. All I know is I went to work one morning and when I came home, my computer had restarted itself and ended up like this, and the only way to get files to and from my computer is to burn a CD.

Here's what I've tried:

- Running anti-virus in safe mode. Says there was an error and to go back to the McAfee homepage and try again.
- Tried Malwarebytes - found a few infections and deleted them, but didn't fix the problem.
- Tried System Restore, but doesn't show any "restore" points other than the day I got the virus.
- Tried DSS and it comes up with a bunch of hashmarks.
- I did what the previous thread said and used OTL and here's the result. PLEASE HELP!!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/424993 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Reopened at OP's PM request.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

The OTL log does not report any suspicious files.
Your DDS log is missing all the processes and the Drivers installed.

I hope that this tool will restore some of the functions you are missing.

Just in case we cannot restore this computer I suggest you copy all you important data files, Pictures, etc... to a CD.
You may have to format this computer and reinstall all the programs.
Do you have the Installation CD for this operating system?

>>> Download Windows Repair: Please go here and click the "- Direct Download" to download tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio_setup.zip and save it to your Desktop. Then right-click on the new file => "Extract here".
Please open the new created folder "Tweaking.com - Windows Repair" and double-click "Repair_Windows.exe" (for Vista/W7, right-click on it =>"Run as administrator").

Start Repairs Options: Click the "Start Repairs" tab

Select Custom Mode.

If prompted to create a Restore point please do. ( You may not be able to create a Restore point. The OTL tool was not able to create one.)

In the new window that opens click the "Unselect all" button to remove all the check-marks.
Then, please check the following and click the "Next" button.

* Reset Registry Permissions
* Reset File Permissions
* Register System Files
* Repair WMI
* Repair Windows Firewall
* Repair Internet Explorer
* Repair MDAC & MS Jet
* Repair Hosts File
* Remove Policies Set By Infections
* Repair Icons
* Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
* Remove Temp Files
* Repair Proxy Settings
* Unhide Non System Files

---------

Check th Box "Restart System When Finished"

Click the Start Button.

Wait for the computer to restart.

This may take some time. Let it fininsh.

Let me know where you stand.

Are the cds from the Manufacturers?

They may not need for an orderly reinstall but I would like to know more about each CD.

First run Repair_Windows.exe and click the "Step3" tab and click the "Do it" button" under "System File Check".
Please follow the on-screen prompts. It can take a while to complete, so please be patient and restart your computer when it's done.

You may be requested to insert a CD and that XP service kit may be needed.

As for the other CD they will be handy if some of the 3rd party software were damaged.

Keep me posted.

Hi again,
I repaired windows xp using the service pack CD and it worked - I followed online instructions from the windows website. However, it seems my audio device isn't working now... it says the driver is installed but when I go to audio under control panels it says no audio device.
