Hello!

Got a nasty virus that I successfully cleaned with the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware product. However, Google searches redirect in Firefox and IE, and IE "starts itself" and plays sound in a hidden window.

My attempts to locate/remove the redirects and autos-starts have been unsuccessful. Can you assist?

Thanks...

Tim

Rootkits are the major cause of redirects.

I have downloaded TDSSKILLER and run several times. It finds no threats and the problems persist. I re-ran Antimalware (full scan) and it also finds nothing, as does MSE (full scan).

Where else can I look?

This topic/thread is *very* similar to my experience:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic401353.html

The thread asks the user to run ComboFix. Your guidelines state that users shouldn't run this unless asked by a helper. I am concerned that the hidden IE instances are exposing my system... should I follow the instructions in the above thread?

I was directed here to start a new topic. On my laptop I have noticed that Internet Explorer "starts by itself" (usually in the background). Occasionally I will start hearing sound from the hidden window (primarily video or audio ads)... the sound stops when I kill the iexplorer process using task manager. After a few minutes the process reappears.

I use MSE as my antivirus. I have run several full scans and found nothing, but I am sure this is the result of malware.

Can you assist?

Hello,

I have merged your new topic here as you neglected to post most of the required information. To restate the latest instructions in a different way:

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Please include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to resolve them.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
