Not fully sure this belongs here, but my friend has recently come upon a problem. When he boots, he is left with nothing but a black screen and a white flashing line/underscore. The computer will not read any CD's from that point. The computer does not give the option to boot into safe mode or BIOS. When any key from the keyboard is pressed it makes a beeping noise. From what I know he hasn't made any recent software changes nor has he touched the hardware inside the computer and he is running windows xp. Sorry, but I don't know anymore specs of the computer besides that its around 5 years old.

Any luck for this computer or is it just dead?

If any more information is needed just say so.

Once again, Not sure if this goes here (might go in the internal hardware section since it is most likely a hardware problem).

Thank you,

System manufacturer and model?

Have you checked the support documentation for the system, available at the system manufacturer's website?

I've never heard a keyboard result in any type of beep...but if it's unresponsive...the keyboard may be dead.

The black screen with flashing cursor indicates that something has gone wrong with the boot process...may happen when Windows cannot recognize attached hardware.

I would try a different keyboard, if possible.
