I have been reading the forums and it seems that my win7 desktop has an issue with the system restore virus/worm/trojan. I was searching the web for information on teens huffing chemicals using Firefox & Google search. One of the pages began playing some annoying video, when I went to close it out I was presented with the same windows and warnings described in this post http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-vista-recovery

normally I would not post on forums concerning issues such as this. I prefer to find the fix myself but the malware seems to have taken itself to a new level on my desktop. I cannot even get F8 to work. The computer launches the MSI screen that offers the press delete to get to the bios and tab to switch to post but only the delete button works then if I let it load all of the way I just get a back screen with the little DOS line flashing but I cannot type anything onto the screen. The only keys that seem to work are control alt delete to restart the computer.

I have been reading through a lot of posts on these forums concerning this issue but have been unable to find one quite the same as my present situation. It would be great to be able to save the information on the hard drive but I just spent a year in Korea and while I was gone my wife misplaced the backup and start-up disks for the desktop.

Is there any hope or should I just trash the hard drive and start over with the desktop?

Thank you

Thank you very much for your reply,

I followed the prep guide but I was not able to create any logs because I cannot get logged onto the computer. After I start the machine I get the normal two beeps, the MSI welcome screen and then a black screen with a flashing white dash in the upper left hand corner.

I can get into the bios screen but that is it. Also when I plug a flash drive I am getting an error message on the black screen that says "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart"

Thank you

Hello again,

I cannot even get into safe mode. None of the f keys work except f11 and that just takes me to a boot option offering the hard drive © floppy, or DVD.

Thank you

Lets try to scan the computer. You will need a USB (Flash) pendrive.

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears. (A Repair CD or Install CD will have the same options)
  • Click on Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Thank you for your reply,

I did as instructed and downloaded the program on a flash drive. Inserted it into the desktop, restarted it, pressed F8 and still cannot get past the black screen with the white flashing _ in the upper left hand corner. I can get into the CMOS setup utility but that is all.

thank you

Don't press F8, tap on it every other second and see if able to reach the advanced menu. Do you have a Recovery CD or an Install CD we can use to reach the Repair Console?

Hello again and thank you for getting back to me,

I cannot get any response out of any of the "f" keys when starting up the desktop. I just got back from deployment and in the year I was gone the startup disc was accidently thrown out.

It was odd because a few days ago when I had the flash drive plugged in I was getting the unplug media and restart the computer message.

This system restore issue is a nasty one. It's like since I did not fall for it now my system is being hidden from me behind a DOS screen that will not accept any keystrokes or other input at all. When it's on the black screen and I hit a key I hear the tick noise come from the computer but nothing else happens unless I either hit control/alt/delete, which takes me back to the black screen.

The only other option I can get to is the CMOS screen, oh but the on/off switch still works but that is not quite the same as it was before. In the past I would have to hold the start button down and the machine would power off more slowly as everything was shutting down. Now I just barely touch the on/off button and instantly the machine is off, almost like it now has a really fast shortcut to turn off.

Thank you

It seems the hard drive is not being recognized. Enter the BIOS setup option, browse around and check in the Hard drive is recognized. Some computers have the option to set the hard drive settings to either ATA or AHCI. Make sure is set to ATA.

If the hard drive and settings are correct, save the settings and attempt to enter into the advanced menu by taping continuously of F8 from the time you see the BIOS splash screen. Ignore any error sound or message.

Let me know the outcome.

We need to be able to boot the computer with a bootable CD such as a Recovery or an install CD for the Operating System in use. Lets try xPUD.

You will need a USB drive and a CD to burn. There will be several steps to follow.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  • Also Download Query.exe to the USB drive. In your working computer, navigate to the USB drive and click on the Query.exe. A folder and a file, query.sh, will be extracted.
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert them in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • In some computers you need to tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD, in others is the Esc key. Please consult your computer's documentation.
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Then type bash driver.sh -af
  • Press Enter
  • You will be prompted to input a filename.
  • Type the following:

    Winlogon.exe

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    volsnap.sys

  • Press Enter
  • If successful, the script will search for this file.
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    explorer.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After it has completed the search enter the next file to be searched
  • Type the following:

    Userinit.exe

  • Press Enter
  • After the search is completed type Exit and press Enter.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as filefind.txt
  • While still in the Open Terminal, type bash query.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as RegReport.txt
  • Then type dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.bin bs=512 count=1

Leave a space among the following Statements:

dd is the executable application used to create the backup
if=/dev/sda is the device the backup is created from - the hard drive when only one HDD exists
of=mbr.bin is the backup file to create - note the lack of a path - it will be created in the directory currently open in the Terminal
bs=512 is the number of bytes in the backup
count=1 says to backup just 1 sector

It is extremely important that the if and of statements are correctly entered.

  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located in the USB drive as mbr.bin
  • Plug the USB back into the clean computer, zip the mbr.bin, and except for the mbr.bin zipped file, post the contents of the report.txt, filefind.txt and RegReport.txt in your next reply. The mbr.bin zipped file must be attached to your reply.

Thank you for getting back to me.

I did as instructed and was able to to everything until it came to the winlogon, volsnap, explorer, and userinit.exe. None of these commands worked, I kept getting the "command not found" error message. Also the bash query.sh gave me a "no such file or directory" error message. The log that I was able to create is below.

Download Dumpit by noahdfear to the USB drive.

  • Remove the USB insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with xPUD
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see the file dumpit in your USB drive and double click on it.
  • After it has finished a report will be located in your USB drive named mbr.zip
  • Attach this file to a reply

Thank you for getting back to me.

I have the mbr zip file on the flash drive but when I try to attach it from the choose file to upload it wants to open the zip file instead of attach it and I am getting an error message that says I need permission from the admin which I am then it says permission from everyone to open it. So I am having problems attaching the zip file.

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much
