Hey guys,

I'm trying to set up a simple home network on my parent's computer. They have one desktop, an HP Pavilion 6228x running windows vista, which we want to be wired, and they have several laptops that will connect wirelessly. The router is a Linksys WRT54G. The router isn't new, it's my sister's old router, but I think it was working last time it was used. The cable modem is an RCA DCM425, and the ISP is roadrunner.

Simple enough, right? So, the first step is to disconnect the ethernet cable from the back panel of the desktop and connect it to the router, then connect an ethernet cable from the router to the computer. As soon as I do this the computer is unable to connect to the internet. When I go to network settings it shows the computer connected to the router but no network access from the router. I've tried resetting the router, resetting the modem, but neither of these helps. This is about as far as my limited computer knowledge takes me. I'm thinking that since the computer can't even connect to the internet when wired to the router, it may be a defective router...but I'm not really sure. Is there anything else I can try? I've posted the results of the minitoolbox scan below, but these are the results with my desktop connected directly to the cable modem, without the router.

Thanks.

Use the router's Automatic configuration for DHCP for Internet connection under Setup Menu. Then look for Network Address Server Settings (DHCP)and Disable DHCP Server. Type 192.168.1.1 on your browser to access the router configuration or setup page.
