Posted 19 October 2011 - 04:05 AM

My computer was infected earlier this month with OpenCloud Security (or something similar, I believe it had "cloud" in the name in any case) and after following some instructions online I believed I had removed the (an?) ZeroAccess Rootkit and whatever else was causing my computer to act strangely. However, I soon found out that AVG wouldn't run correctly and couldn't fix itself with the repair function that is built into it. Everything else about my computer seemed to work the same as always though, so I chalked this up as something to do later and never did anything about it.

Now a second infection has started wreaking havok on my computer. Specifically the System Restore virus that hides all your files and whatnot. I followed the instructions on this site (here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-system-restore) and that got rid of the virus (though I screwed up and was unable to restore my shortcuts) and restored most of my system's functionality, but there are still issues that need resolving and I'm sure malware that needs deleting.

I've been messing around with the computer myself trying to fix it, but I simply have no idea what to do from here, so I'm just going to list anything I've noticed or done that might be relevant and hope someone here can make sense of it all.

1. After restarting my computer and sporadically afterwards it's been going I get a pop-up telling me that my copy of windows isn't genuine or that I need to validate it. Validating online never works, but typing in the product key fixes it for awhile. I haven't copied down the exact messages I'm afraid, but if I see anymore I will take a screenshot or transcribe them if I need to.

2. Google originally was redirecting me to links besides the one I would click on when I searched with it, but after I installed MalwareBytes it now just doesn't load and bring up a message from MalwareBytes about how it blocked an outgoing threat from an IP address and port that I think keep changing. Bing also does this now, though these 2 sites seem to be the only ones affected. I can use Yahoo to search for example.

3. Some programs won't let me alter them saying that I need permission from "System" or sometimes even the account I'm logged into. Considering I'm the only one who uses this computer and have it set so that I'm an administrator, I don't know how this happens. On a possibly related note, in the security tab in the properties of some files "TrustedInstaller" is listed among the regular names and typically has special priveliges I can't alter. I've used GrantPerms, which I downloaded in my first fight with OpenCloud, to allow alteration to some of these files and then deleted them, but I'm not sure how many are infected or if deleting them after I've done this actually solves the problem.

4. In an effort to find out if any of the processes my computer is running are malware, I've discovered that when I go to Run and type services.mmc, "wscvc" is listed among the services there. The file database on this site leads me to believe this is a virus, but services.mmc is the only place I can find any trace of it, and attempting to stop or disable it will only temporarilly stop or disable it.

5. Both when I was trying to remove OpenCloud and System Restore I tried to use ComboFix. And both times it has given me warnings about AVG running that might interfere with it and then gotten to the part where it tells me the scan might take longer than 10 minutes if my machine is badly infected and hung there for as long as I leave it open. The most perplexing part about this is that it still gives me this message even after I've uninstalled or deleted every trace of AVG I can find. I've since uninstalled ComboFix in case it might be a problem with that.

6. Since I've started trying to fix my computer I've downloaded and ran: autoruns, Defogger, GrantPerms, Process Explorer, AntiZeroAccess, rkill (and the iExplore version), tdsskiller, unhide, MalwareBytes, and SUPERAntiSpyware. AntiZeroAccess, tdsskiller, MalwareBytes and SUPERAntiSpyware have all found and removed many threats, but now cannot find anything else when I run them. I've also installed and uninstalled ComboFix as mentioned above, but never could get it to scan properly.

That's about all I can think of right now. If you need details on anything I've mentioned let me know. I eagerly await assistance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/424125 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

ComboFix still won't run correctly. It get's to the part that says

-
Scanning for infected files...
This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes
However, scan times for badly infect machines may easilly double
-

and just sits there indefinately. And, while this may be unrelated, when I start it up, a message box pops up that says

-
ComboFix has detected the following real time scanner(s) to be active:

antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011
antispyware: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011

Antivirus and intrusion prevention programs are known to interfere
with ComboFix's running. This may lead to unpredictable results or
possible machine damage.

Please disable scanners before clicking 'OK'.
-

And when I click OK it's followed by another that says

-
antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011
antispyware: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011

The above real time scanner(s) are still active but ComboFix shall
continue to run. Kindly note this is at your own risk
-

This doesn't make sense to me because as I stated in my original post, I uninstalled AVG. Furthermore, it's telling me that I still have the 2011 version of AVG even though I had the 2012 version before any computer problems emerged.

I tried reinstalling AVG to see if I disabled it when it was installed if the message would go away, but it would not. I've since uninstalled it again and the message still persists.

I also tried restarting my computer, shutting down all the processes and programs I thought might interfere with ComboFix, and then didn't touch anything after clicking OK on both the warning messages and ComboFix proceeded to do nothing for over 6 hours, so I don't know what to do from here.

On another note, how my computer works hasn't changed at all from what I described in the initial post. Windows sporadically informs me that I am not running genuine Windows and that I need to validate it, Google still won't load and it just goes to a generic "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error page instead and Malware Bytes simultaneously tells me that it "Successfully blocked access to a potentially malicious website" with a random IP address that was "Type: outgoing, Port: [a random 5 digit number], Process: iexplorer.exe", and all the other stuff's still there too but it's still usable and isn't really impeded too much when I do work or play or just browse the web.

I did, however, neglect to mention 2 other symptoms in my initial post.

1. When I restart my computer, it tells me that the Recycling Bin is corrupt and asks me if I want to empty it. I do, and things seem fine. Never saw that before I got these other problems though.

2. Occasionally my computer just drags for a few seconds. Even when I only have like 1 program running it just chugs for a minute or two and then its fine. The weird thing is it seems like it's genuinely going in slow motion, I don't know how else to describe it. Audio and video go into slow-mo, my cursor jumps around when I try to move it, but everything keeps going and nothing crashes or gets any errors. Its just really weird.

Anyways, I'm guessing that I need to fix my computer enough to get ComboFix running, but I have no idea about how to do that.

don't worry about AVG - combofix is just finding a left over folder or something - go ahead and run it

But I did run it. I clicked past the messages and I left it sitting for 6 hours and it never moved past the part that said "Scanning for infected files... This typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes However, scan times for easilly infect computers may easilly double." According to the tutorial on this site (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix) it should change my clock settings and say "Completed Stage_1", but it never did that for me. Unless that 10 minute estimate is ridiculously low and I really just need to let it sit for a few days before it finishes, I think there's something wrong.

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Running ComboFix in safe mode was even less sucessful than in a regular start up. This time, once I started the program both the warning boxes about AVG popped up again, but then after clicking ok on both nothing happened. No other windows opened up. The blue screen never got to create a new system restore point as it does in a regular boot-up, nor did it start scanning.

Hello

Lets get a deeper look into the system and see if something shows up.

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTListIt.txt in your next reply.

All right! Google and Bing work again! Not sure about any of the other symptoms yet, but I can at least say that the redirecting is gone. Log is after the break.

Edit: I do still get pop-ups that say I need to validate windows, so I'm guessing there's still some problems that need to be fixed.

Hello

:P2P Warning!:

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Please read these short reports on the dangers of peer-2-peer programs and file sharing.

These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  • An update should begin;
  • follow the prompts

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  • Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

If you have problems running Hijackthis.

sometimes we have to run it like this To run HijackThis as an administrator,
rightclick HijackThis.exe (located: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe)
and select to run as administrator

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • Log From MBAM
  • report from Hijackthis
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Currently, the computer seems to be running well, no pop-ups about validating windows since I ran the newly downloaded programs, but then again it's possible they just haven't popped up yet. Also there haven't been any notifications about the Recyling Bin being corrupt, but that was also very rare and I can't say for sure if they're gone. TrustedInstaller still appears in some folder property's security tabs, but I'm not sure if that's something that can be fixed automatically or if it has to be manual on each item that's infected. I probably will just have to use the computer for awhile to see if things are fixed, but right now it looks good. I didn't have any problems during the scans, and logs are after the break.
