I have a pc here that i think has been infected but having problems pinpointing/diagnosing the source of the troubles as there are various error messages & symtoms

During startup it always display message ; "One of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. the recovery was successful"

then 2 further messages : " microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library
Runtime error!
Program: ... commonfiles\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray 9.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information"

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime error!
Program: ... commonfiles\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray 9.exe
R6025
-pure virtual function call"

and that occurs during the every startup process. Windows XP seems to operate generally ok after that so these messages are more an irritation than anything. But I have trouble installing/uninstalling diagnostic applications or anti virus/virus scan software.

trying to install/uninstall generally results in the following message:
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are
running windows in safe mode or if the windows installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personel for assistance"

I have followed instructions on microsoft site to both Reregister windows installer & reinstall windows
installer (support.microsoft.com/kb/315346) But to no avail.

looking at the computer i can see the owner has used various file sharing applications (LimeWire/FrosWire)
and has installed SpywareBot & AntispywareBot (looking on web it appears these may not be all they claim !)

So guys, where do i start ?

your help is most appreciated.
