Laptop boots and takes forever to get to a 'full run', then the machine is very slow. WHen runnign searches via Google, the machine hangs up on each letter, almost like I'm typing a letter every 10-15 seconds. WHen worknig off-line, the machine randomly just hangs - have to restart apps like Word and Excel. Loking at the performance monitor it seems the disc is at 100% nearly all the time.

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Have you run full scans with BOTH your anti virus app and with MalwareBytes? If not, do so now.
