Windows XP service pack 3
AMD Athalon 64

First indication of trouble was yesterday (Oct 10 2011). While web browsing with Firefox 3.6.23, an error window appeared indicating that Microsoft Security Essentials had been deactivated. I could not re-activated it because it was unresponsive. I then tried to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials but received an error message saying that the installation wizard "can't find files necessary to complete the installation". Anyway, I was trying to uninstall it, then reinstall it. Things got worse from there. While researching the problem with Google, Firefox (3.6) began to redirect if I clicked on any of the search results. Some Google results show the URL along with the descriptive text. Copy and pasting that URL directly into the address bar usually enabled me to get to the target site. Changing the default search engine to Bing has helped me access bleepingcomputer.com.

As I tried various anti malware applications, some of them became unresponsive and/or shut down.
- Malwarebytes would start, then shut down. Now it won't open.
- Spybot detected malware called Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallBypass. I allowed that to be fixed.
- Avast Free Antivirus detected many issues. Some fixable and some not.
- Before it shut down and would not restart, aswMBR detected Whistler rootkit. None of the others have detected that.
- Kaspersky TDSSKiller detected Rootkit.Win32.ZAccess.e, and two other suspicious files. I "cured" the rootkit, but it reappears with a slightly different filename after re-booting. Ex: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Fips.sys.
- I didn't run GMER because my system is 64 bit.
- Now I am following the guidelines shown in "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help"
- I have my original Windows XP disk, but want to save re-loading Windows as a very last resort.

I also want to admit that while scanning with Avast Free Antivirus, I deleted some infected files that couldn't be moved or fixed. I'm hoping that I can restore them with my original, licensed Windows XP disc.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this. I wish I were expert enough to help others. In the meantime, I will resist the temptation to tinker with my system.

  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

:multiple Anti Virus programs:

It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

AV: PC Tools AntiVirus 3.1.0.10
AV: Microsoft Security Essentials
AV: avast! Antivirus

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.

Hi Gringo, thanks for taking the time to help me out. I havenít made any changes to my machine since posting for help. I have been researching this issue and came across an older posting wherein you helped someone with a problem similar to mine. I studied that case in an effort to become familiar with what I may be required to do at this end. I hope that youíll find me to be a willing and capable student.

My machineís current performance is unpredictable, and some of the anti-malware applications that are installed are non-operational.

You noticed that there are remnants of PC Tools Antivirus 3.1.0.10 on my system. I uninstalled that application a long time ago, but pieces of it show up once in a while and I donít know how to get rid of it. Nothing that I can recognize as belonging to PC Tools Antivirus shows up in the task manager or in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. I would really like to get rid of all traces of PC Tools Antivirus.

I have successfully uninstalled Avast! Antivirus.

Microsoft Security Essentials does not show up in the notification area (system tray), but does show up in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Iím not able to uninstall it; an error window appears saying:

ďThe Microsoft Security Client Installation Wizard canít find files that are necessary to complete the installation. To install this program, please download the installation again from the Microsoft Security Client web siteĒ.

When I try to re-install it, an error window appears saying that Microsoft Security Essentials is already installed, and so it wonít re-install. Iíd like to get rid of Microsoft Security Essentials too, at least for now.

I downloaded and tried to run Combofix. I didnít know if I should turn off Windows Firewall or not, so I whitelisted Combofix and left Windows Firewall turned on. Combofix notified me that the Microsoft Security Essentials realtime scanner was still active, and asked me to turn it off. So it seems that Microsoft Security Essentials is still active although I canít see it, or uninstall it, or re-install it. Looks like this is a sticking point. I took the option to run Combofix anyway, and it hung with a flashing cursor for 20 minutes. At that point I tried to close Combofix but it became unresponsive, and I had to do a hard reboot of the computer.

*** OK, after some research, I found a way to disable ďPC Tools Antivirus EngineĒ, and to also disable ďSecurity CenterĒ in Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> services. This level of tinkering is a little bit outside of my comfort zone, but it seems like the right thing to do at this time. Iím going to allow the changes, shut everything down and reboot. Then Iíll try Combofix again. Wish me luck.

Well, the system hung on shutdown at ďSaving your settingsĒ. I did a hard re-boot and will now check the status of Microsoft Security Essentials... Looks like itís off now. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> services verifies that ďPC Tools Antivirus EngineĒ and ďSecurity CenterĒ are disabled. Cool.

Now Iíll try Combofix again. See you on the other side.

OK good, Combofix warned again that Microsoft Security Essentials was still running even though Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> services verified that it was disabled. Combofix gave me the option to run anyway, so I did that and it worked this time. Yay! Had a couple of detections and reboots. After the log file was produced, I turned the Windows Firewall back on. Donít know if I did the right thing in turning it off in the first place. Interestingly, when I turned the firewall back on, the antivirus came back on too. So thatís running now too even though it doesn't show in the notification area (system tray). Iíd really like to remove Microsoft Security Essentials permanently. Itís hard to control.

Thank for reading this far, Gringo. You are a saint.

A quick check just now shows no re-directs and good page load times.
I'm going to set my homepage back to google.com (bing had been working better than google) on all three browsers (Firefox, MIE, Chrome) and then close everything down neatly. I'll reboot and test for re-directs and page loading times.

After setting homepages to google.com on all three browsers and rebooting, Iím seeing no re-directs and normal page load times. Also, my SanDisk Cruzer flash drive is recognized again (I forgot to mention that issue), although the U3 autorun function doesnít work. Thatís just for your information. Iíll deal with the flash drive. The backup data are still there.

Hereís the Combofix log file:

Hi Gringo, I forgot to mention that on restart I get the following error message:

"Microsoft Security Client"
"An error has occurred in the program. Try to open it again. If this problem continues, you'll need to reinstall Microsoft Security Client."

I click on OK and the error window closes.

Thanks again

Greetings

Don't try to uninstall anything at this point - it is not the programs that are faulty it is the virus playing with permisions and I will deal with them in a post or two - I want to clear out all the infection first

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

File::
c:\windows\system32\c_05314.nl_

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Oct 17 2011
1:45 pm Eastern Daylight Time (USA)

Hi Gringo. Again, thanks for your help on this. Things are progressing well thanks to your instructions.

I want to make sure that I donít forget to tell you that Iíll be away from this computer (itís a desktop computer) until Wednesday evening, Oct 19 2011. (Eastern Daylight Time USA). My mother is having outpatient surgery, and Iím going out of town to look after her. I will be able to check in and review the next step though.

I made a mistake this morning by running the Combo fix script before using Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services to disable (Microsoft) Security Center. By the time I realized my error, the Combfix script was already started. At that point, I didnít want to exit Combofix irregularly, so I waited for the prompts that say Microsoft Security Essentials is running, and to please disable it before continuing. Since I canít disable Microsoft Security Essentials without a reboot, I accepted the option to allow Combofix to run anyway.

The Combofix script did run, and it produced a log file. But the log file was huge. Maybe 20 pages or so. I saved that log file but thatís not the one Iím pasting into this message (see below).

After mistakenly running the Combofix script with Microsoft Security Essentials turned on, I went to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services to disable it. Then I rebooted and verified that (Microsoft) Security Center was disabled. Then I ran the Combofix script a second time.

Combofix again notified me that Microsoft Security Essentials was running (just like in my previous post), and again I accepted the option to run the script anyway. Combofix ran without trouble and produced a normal looking log file. Thatís the log file that I have attached to this message.

I also want to tell you that when I ran Combofix this morning, it advised me that an updated version was available, and asked if I wanted to download the newer version. In both instances, I allowed the newer version. I hope it wasnít a trick of the rootkit. Just wanted to let you know. Oh, and I also want to let you know that after running the Combofix script with Security Center disabled via Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, Microsoft Security Essentials appeared to have become re-enabled. Hmmm.

I did some web browsing this morning with Firefox (3.6) and google.com. There were no browser hijacks and page loading times were normal.

Gringo, I really appreciate your patience and expertise in this matter. Itís a great relief to have the help of someone who knows whatís happening to my machine. The log file from this morningís second running of the Combofix script is pasted below:

Hello Gringo-

All progressing well here. Thanks for continuing to help me. This is interesting.

My computer is continuing to run well. The only visible issue is that I still get the following error message after Windows XP start-up:

"Microsoft Security Client"
"An error has occurred in the program. Try to open it again. If this problem continues, you'll need to reinstall Microsoft Security Client."

When I click on OK and the error window closes, and the computer runs normally. I remember that you advised me not to worry about that right now, thank you.

I followed the instructions in your latest post, and everything worked fine.

The MBAM and Hijackthis log files are pasted below.

Hello again Gringo

I want to let you know that right after my last posting above, I opened Firefox (3.6), and the Microsoft.NET Framework Assistant 1.1 extension automatically downloaded and installed.

I have now disabled automatic updates in Firefox.

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded startup entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VTTimer] VTTimer.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VTTrayp] VTtrayp.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\Lib\NeroCheck.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [F.lux] "C:\Documents and Settings\M\Local Settings\Apps\F.lux\flux.exe" /noshow
      O4 - Startup: LaunchU3.exe.lnk = ?
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...

One of the detections looks like itís related to an application called ďWikipadĒ that I downloaded and installed a while ago. It turned out to be something I donít use, and donít need. Iíd like to uninstall it eventually.

Hello

There are some minor things in your online scan that should be removed.

delete files

  • Copy all text in the quote box (below)...to Notepad.

    @echo off
    rd /s /q "C:\Documents and Settings\M\Local Settings\Application Data\9b3bd8f4\"
    del %0

  • Save the Notepad file on your desktop...as delfile.bat... save type as "All Files"
It should look like this: Posted Image<--XPPosted Image<--vista
  • Double click on delfile.bat to execute it.
A black CMD window will flash, then disappear...this is normal.
  • The files and folders, if found...will have been deleted and the "delfile.bat" file will also be deleted.

The rest of the Online scan is only reporting backups created during the course of this fix C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\, and/or items located in System Restore's cache C:\System Volume Information\, Whatever is in these folders can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. the following steps will remove these backups.

Very well done!! This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware - Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are.

The following procedure will implement some cleanup procedures. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.

Any programs and logs that are left over you can just be deleted from the desktop. TFC is a free temp file cleaner that is very easy to use, I would keep this and use before you do any scans or when you want to free up some space.

:DeFogger:

  • To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

:Uninstall ComboFix:

  • turn off all active protection software
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.

  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector

:Turn On Automatic Updates:

Turn On Automatic Updates
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:

  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. We used this to help clean your computer and recomend keeping it and using often.

Thanks Gringo! You saved me.

My computer is working like new.

I really appreciate all of your help. This computer is very important to me.

I will review and implement all of your security suggestions. Iím also going to re-install my wired router and set it up to serve as a hardware firewall.

After closing this topic Iím going to start cleaning up some legacy issues that I was having before working with you through bleeping computer. If I get stuck, Iíll post the following issues on bleepingcomputer as new topics:

1.
Microsoft Security Essentials is broken and shows an error message on start-up. It wonít allow me to un-install through Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. It wonít allow me install a new copy either. ComboFix warned that Microsoft Security Essential was running even after I stopped the service through Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services -> Security Center -> Stop. I have located a Microsoft page that describes how to manually un-install Microsoft Security Essentials, and will follow that procedure.

2.
There is a ComboFix generic icon on my desktop left over from a ComboFix installation that quit working. Itís a read-only file that gives an error message when I try to delete it. The ComboFix that we used to clean up my computer has uninstalled properly.

3.
There are remnants of an older, un-installed copy of PC Tools AntiVirus Engine left on my computer. PC Tools AntiVirus Engine is disabled now, but I will try to uninstall it following instructions from the Microsoft Answers page.

4.
I will uninstall all of the anti malware applications that are on this computer, and then start fresh based on the recommendations that you posted.

Thanks again, Gingo. You are a saint!

We can close this topic.

Hi Gringo

Thanks for continuing to help me out.

I downloaded and unzipped Junction.zip to my C drive.

Then I pasted the text from the code box into notepad and saved it as a file of ďall typesĒ named junc.bat.

I double clicked on junc.bat, it opened a command prompt, and a minute later I got a log in notepad.

junc.bat log pasted below:
