Whenever I click a link to download a .exe file from the net, the file download box appears, but then nothing happens, and it just stays there forever. The download progress box remains empty, and the other fields such as the estimated time left remain blank.

It's only recently that I've had this problem, so something's gone wrong somewhere.

I've tried searching on Google, clearing spyware and adware, done a thorough 2 hour virus check, and a system restore but I still can't clear up the problem.

Any help would be very gratefully received as it's driving me mad.

Hi Jim1978

Do you surf with Internet Explorer ?
Then check this out:

* In the menu on the top of an internet windows, choose "Tools" > "Internet Options" > the "Security" tab
* click "Internet Zone" > Custom button
* Under "Downloads", is the download of files Enabled ? If not, enable it > clicj "OK" button, reboot and try if you can download .exe files now,

Also check out security program (anti-virus, ..) , one might be blocking the download of .exe files from the internet.

Good luck!

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Unforunately it was already set to enable so the problem's still there.

I've noticed that when I right-click on a download link and save target as, this option doesn't appear any more and it just goes straight to the file download box and hangs there forever, before eventually telling me internet explorer can't open it. Any idea how to get this option back?

I'm thinking that maybe IE's damaged in some way, but when I looked into how to repair it, I saw the words "edit registry" which always scare me.

It looks like I'm going to have to get an expert round to sort it out.

Hi

Perhaps IEFix utility can repair it?
It repairs lots of 'strange' errors in IE

Only 1 of the "repairs" for IE involves a bit of registry diving. Here's the link to Microsoft's ways: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

You can uninstall SP2 and then reinstall it - thereby fixing IE.

Or, you can perform a repair install of XP (which will also fix IE)- directions are here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
