Laptop doesn't open some programs

Hello,

I was redirected here from this post. I'm unable to run any of the required scans at the moment as I can't figure out why any of my internet browsers will not launch. I already have Malwarebyte on the machine but it, along with internet browsers and my anti-virus (Avast) will not launch. To save from opening another window I will copy and paste the post:

"Hello Bleeping community,

Today I found myself with a rather tough problem on my laptop. It seems to have gone through a windows update and thus restart itself. After the restart I have been unable to launch internet explorer, firefox, or google chrome on the machine. I'm also unable to launch my anti-virus or malwarebyte to scan it (I have tested all these things to no avail in safe mode as well). It seems like other things still work on the laptop such as games (online games still check for updates and download them), images still open, and I can still open and read through text documents. Until this point I don't recall any infected alerts from avast nor any unusual behavior from the machine. It should be noted that it seems like the computer is booting faster (as if some necessary programs might not be loading after restart) and that I have attempted a system restore to a few days back and nothing seems to be working.

In task master under the processes tab I have the following (I guess it should be noted I'm on a Toshiba Satellite running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit):

Once I can get internet browsers working on the laptop again I will be happy to post the required logs.

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:
