Please, please help. When I turn on the computer it only shows the setup is starting screen. I have read many threads but they all contain ability to access start-up screen and I do not. I also do not get the pop up box to install windows 7. I literally only get "resuming windows" for 2 seconds, then straight to setup is starting services screen. I cannot pull up task manager or anything else. It is my nieces computer and I have no idea what she has been doing with it so I have no additional information for you. It is an Acer brand with windows 7, which is why I posted in this forum. Many thanks in advance for any replies.

Dottie

It is the aspire 5742 laptop and no she was not trying to reinstall. She has only had this laptop since July, and says that one day she turned it on and that was the screen she had. There are 5 different people in her house that also use it so there is no telling what the real story is.

What is a services screen? Can it boot to windows desktop or Advance boot menu such as safemode(F8 on booting up)?

It is a black screen that says "Setup is starting services" and no I cannot get to desktop nor advance boot menu. When the laptop is turned on I get an Acer logo (2 seconds), Resuming windows and windows logo like it's coming out of sleep mode (also only 2 seconds long) and then "setup is starting services" screen. I am unable to get any other screen than the 3 I just described. I know this is not a lot to work with so I appreciate you taking the time to try and help. Thanks :)

You would need the win 7 disk to repair the system.

her friends did something to it I feel that probably got infected. On newer computers there is a recovery partition you will have do a hard shutdown or remove the battery replace the battery and boot it up in Advance Revory Options tapping F8 before windows splash screen. There might be a Fix my Computer option on there so that will be the recovery partition. If you can get there to the Advance Recovery Options. please reply back
