I have a Windows XP machine that has the google redirect virus/malware, which seems to be quite popular on this forum. Anyway, following a google search link takes me to uniquesearchsolutions or something similar. My firewall settings have changed (i get asked if I want to unblock each program I use) and my antivirus (Windows Security Essentials) has been turned off, and will not restart. I have tried TDSSkiller, which ran and appeared to work but did not solve the problem. I then tried to download and run malwarebytes which installed and updated, but quits seconds into the actual scan (full). This is the same if I rename the mbam application file to something random. I then tried to run Rkill, and its various other names, and while I do see a black box show up quickly, nothing actually happens. I then tried to re-install and run malwarebytes in Safe mode, but it just disappeared during the scan the same way.
Also of note, This happened about a month ago, and I tried all of these solutions and more (online antivirus scans, adaware, etc.) I ended running combofix without any guidance and the problem seemed solved. I was able to reinstall the antivirus and the redirect problem was gone.
Any help you guys could give me would be great.
Thanks in advance for your help.
