This problem is on my XP pro - SP3 machine ( with Linux on a separate partition ).

This is just my backup/ play machine. I mainly just use it to run Folding@Home, and do my cd/dvd burning. I rarely search on the internet with it, and I keep all security programs up to date. In fact I just updated/ran my Avast and Malwarebytes scans.

The past week or so... when I 'randomly' open or close apps, the screen goes black for 4-5 seconds, then back to normal. after it does this several times, the monitor turns off, and I have to manually shutdown and restart the machine. I don't see any specific apps that are repetitive to this. I honestly can't think of anything I've done differently lately to correspond with the problem starting.

Some additional info - it will also freeze up sometimes when I, have several windows open, and it takes forever for them to shut down. And then they don't always shut down - sometimes I'm left with small rectangular 'faded' boxes all over my desktop ( from the programs ) that don't go away - have to restart. I had one the other day that left an image of my start button at the top of my desktop!!!!!

I haven't tried a system restore because I'm afraid of losing the information in my Foldind@Home packet - though I think most of the data has been already uploaded?

This is so.......... strange, I'm not sure if you need more info or not.

Thanks,

Keith

I would try System Restore...Folding just cuts off at what has been uploaded and then when reconnected will pick up with a new assignment, so it's not a considerqation, IMO.

Since you provided no info on system, it's hard to suggest anything else, IMO.

Although...anything that makes the system shut down/power down...I'd be inclined to look at overheating and PSU issues as primary suspects.

Just to clarify, the computer itself doesn't shut down. Just after the screen goes black then back on a few times, it stays black and the monitor turns off.

I didn't see any restore points available. I took a look at the setting for disc space usage and it was set at 2%. If I understand correctly - having it set too low will delete previous restore points?

Here's a little more information - - -

Im on Win98se and sometimes i have this happen also...

I usually discover its when all my ram has been used up and my computer HAS NOT ACCESSED THE SWAP FILE CORRECTLY causing the monitor to go black.. (My monitor shares 8 Megs of ram with the computer which i think is why)

I usually have to reboot when this occurs..... (I try not to do things to cause this to happen mind you!!)

Good luck buddy :)
