Wow this took root pretty quickly. I don't even understand how I got it in the first place, unless it was off of some malicious link from reddit -.-

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic422950.html

Anyways, yesterday this was only a google redirect problem; though there were some extra tabs popping up by themselves when I left my browser (and even when I didn't) open. Now when I came back home there was a fake virus removal program, one of many. I didn't get a chance to catch what it was, because as soon as I moved my mouse my computer auto-shut down. I'm now running safe-mode with networking. I turned off the auto-proxy path that the virus is using to disable my networking, so I should be safe here. Here's the MBAM scan. I don't have anything else installed yet, so list steps for me:

*Edit, I haven't restarted my laptop yet after this scan, as I read other threads saying that restarting allowed the "Rogue Cloud" program, or whatever it is that is giving me problems to just return as if it hadn't been deleted. Also, I kind of have to run. Will follow any instructions given ASAP when i get back in 3 hours. Thank you so much.

So restarted successfully back into non-safe mode. Redirect problem+multiple tabs problem still exists, so undoubtedly if that caused the Open Cloud issue, it will be back. Bump, my laptop is my baby, I'm distressed.

**** End of log ****

***MBAM doesn't detect the rootkit. Also, GMER is not working correctly for me. I've disabled the firewall and internet to run it, as well as tried to run it in safe mode. It's not that it doesn't start running. It starts, and just kind of stops...is it supposed to be literally a 2 second scan? In that case I don't know where to find the log.

Hello,

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then post them in a reply to this topic by using the Add Reply button.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the post and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the reply and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

Please note that I am not a member of the Malware Removal Team and will not be assisting you in removing the infection. I'm simply helping you to post the information they need in order to assist you.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Hi, Blssom. I'm facing a pressing emergency on this side of the screen, was quite unforseen. I should be more free to produce these logs come Wednesday, but I'd like to ask that this thread stay open till then. My sincerest apologies, I definetely haven't forgotten about this, just unable to do anything due to recent events.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help, but you seem to have been as busy as we are.
Please follow these instructions instead of the general ones, as I will be the one helping you. I'll keep the topic open until the end of the week. :)

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.
If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about the Windows version you are using: What we in particular need to know is version, edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system. [/b]
If you are unsure about any of these caracteristics, just let us know and we'll help you figuring it out. Please also tell us if you have your Windows CD/DVD handy.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • In the custom scan box paste the following:
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    wininit.exe
    hlp.dat
    /md5stop
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi myrti! Thank you for the response. Turned out I had some downtime to do this. I already ran DeFogger and DDS, I have those logs on my desktop if you do need them. GMER still didn't work though. My problem of google redirect still is present, though I'm no longer being bothered by the Rogue Anti Spyware type program. I do not have any setup/installation CD's handy on me.

Hi,

there's a number of left overs on the PC. Please run ComboFix next:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Okay, I started running combofix; but I had to get up and take care of something while it was running. when I got back it appeared that my machine was stalled. The screen had changed to an idle state, but moving the mouse didn't return my desktop. I tried to ctr/alt/del and pull up task manager, but it did nothing except show the mouse cursor (which wouldn't move). I force booted my computer, and upon logging in; I got a windows message saying that something was trying to access windows explorer. Before I could click allow access (as I assumed it was Combo Fix) it just closed and took me to my desktop. ComboFix window then popped up and said it was preparing the log. I'm not sure if it was run to completion, so if this log is incomplete, please let me know and I can try running it again while paying closer attention, or running it in safe mode. I do see something that says Cloud Protection.ico was deleted, so I'm guessing this is a good thing :P?

Oh, I just checked, and I'm no longer being redirected on Google! Huzzah! Should I go ahead with the ComboFix uninstall? Or is there another step in between

**Edit: I did just get a message that told me that host process for windows has stopped working. Was not an error message, was just a bug report/submission message. Don't know what that's all about

**Edit2: Also got a popup that says "out of memory at line 43", and then same popup again at the same time as "Host process for windows services has stopped working."

I'm able to just close these and nothing happens...but it's worrying me.

Hi,

there are definitely some left overs in that log that need to be removed and may still be active:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Folder::
c:\users\Rahul\AppData\Roaming\8E978
c:\users\Rahul\AppData\Roaming\C198E
c:\users\Rahul\AppData\Roaming\VfffRLL9gTXqYCk
c:\users\Rahul\AppData\Roaming\B666dWWK8fRLhTq
c:\users\Rahul\AppData\Roaming\BZZZ9hhTXw
c:\users\Rahul\AppData\Roaming\tzPPPNycA1uvDoF
c:\users\Rahul\AppData\Local\03e0fa87
registry::

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon]
"Shell"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

regards myrti

The PC has been doing fine with regards to solving the redirect problem. This was solved by the first ComboFix run. I haven't gotten another error message as previously mentioned 2 posts ago either, but I didn't get them constantly earlier either. I'll let time tell on that. Is there anything else we need to run?

Hi,

yes please run a scan with Eset to check for leftovers we've missed sof ar:
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
