Hi, I will try to keep this to the point. If you need more details let me know.

I ran MBAM and found 3 objects named rootkit.0access on my computer. I restarted in safe mode and ran MBAM again and found 1 more. My computer seemed to be running normal (even before I ran MBAM), but I decided to do a reformat (using system recovery partition). During the process of re-downloading and updating my newly reformatted computer I had 2 possible issues:

1). Internet explorer not working/error, but it works normally now. Error was probably due to lack of updates.

2). When I went to re-download MBAM I was extra cautious and didn't download it the first time. I went through MBAM site and was redirected to CNET for the download. The first time I arrived at CNET the "download now" link was English. The second (and third time) it was in a different language (I think Dutch). Later when I did it again it was back in English. I'm wondering if I might have stumbled upon a hidden manipulation in my default language from the virus or if it was just an error. By the way I downloaded it the 4th time and it works fine.

Anyway, bottom line: Can you view my logs and tell me if I am still infected in any way? My computer seems to be running normally (I think I'm in the free and clear), but I want to make sure there isn't something hidden.

Here are my DDS logs. I couldn't get the GMER log. Every time I run GMER I get a blue screen error and my computer restarts. If I need to do something different please let me know. And THANK YOU so much for your time.

Last night I tried running GMER in safe mode and it seemed to work. I didn't finish the scan because I didn't have the time last night and I wasn't sure if it was useful (being in safe mode). Please let me know if you would like me to run it in safe mode or if I should try something else (I am thinking the BSOD is caused because of a lack of resources).

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Hi Gringo,

Thanks for the response. I've ran some scans with MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware and Microsoft Security Essentials (quick scan only). I haven't found any threats. My computer seems to be functioning normal. If I still had a virus would it be able to hide itself this well or would my computer be showing some obvious signs?

I read that some virus/malware can hide in boot sectors and kernels or jump the partition where formatting wouldn't work. Is this rootkit.0access the type of virus that can survive a format?

Sorry for the hesitation, but I'm not that good with computers and I just want to double check before I start this process.

Thanks again,
Nick

Depending on how the format was done then the virus would not survive.

this is a nasty virus and if it was me I would do the scans just for the peace of mind

I reformatted using the recovery partition. I did make a set of recovery discs not too long ago, (before this infection). I assume they are just a copy of what is on the recovery partition. I've decided that I would rather reformat than go through the scanning process.

Do you think I should reformat again, a different way? Should I format the whole drive both partitions and install using the recovery disc? After the format should I repartition the drive and copy the recovery discs into the D partition, just in case something happens to the discs?

Thank you so much for your help and sorry I changed my mind about the scanning (I guess I am in the wrong forum now).

Nick

Hello

It sounds like you did it the correct way and you are not having symptoms so you should be OK

Hi,

Thanks for your help. I just re-read my post and I realized some my thoughts were jumbled together.

To clarify, I reformatted using the recovery partition (system restore). I have a copy of recovery discs that I made last year, but I didn't use them.

Thanks again!

Have a great day,

Nick

Thanks, but from what I read it look like I'm okay with the format from the recovery partition. I might do a more thorough format just for peace of mind. If for some reason I change my mind, I'll let you know. Sorry for being such a pain. I appreciate your time.
