Mouse Problem

today while using the computer my mouse just stopped working randomly.....after sometime it againg started working again and then stopped permanently
but when i started using my windows xp...the mouse worked fine but did stop sometimes in between.
can this be a hardware problem or are there some software problems recorded for this too?

by the way i restarted my windows 7 several times but the mouse still didnt work...please help
