at random times, my computer would slow to a crawl. task manager said "SYSTEM" was using 98-99%. at these times, it would

sometimes take 2-3 minutes for it to respond to a click and when i tried to shutdown it would freeze up before it finished

and i'd have to shut down by the power button. sometimes this condition would last for hours.

about 5 months ago, i had a problem with the bracket that secures the heatsink/fan to the cpu. i guess the bracket was

old and the tabs that the heatsink clipped on to broke, letting it come off and dangle down. then the computer would loose

power without warning and no error messages. i restarted several times and it would run awhile and shut down. i looked

inside and saw the heatsink. i got it fixed and it did ok for a couple of days.

after that, there was a problem with the isp equipment (bundled phone/cable/internet) which a repairman said was corrected. during this time, my internet

connection got deleted while trying to download a nvidia driver and i had to reinstall windows.

the problem hasn't occurred again since 9/24, but running videos uses 75-100% of cpu and i tried to edit photos in
"paint.net" and it shut itself down. no error messages.

what was going on here? is my cpu damaged? is my internet connection or isp the problem? any information

appreciated.thanks.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

It looks normal.
You'd have to catch the issue if it's intermittent.
Try to post another PE log, when have an actual spike.

Given your description of your heatsink repair, I would venture a guess that your CPU is overheating and shutting down. You don't always get any kind of a warning or error message when that happens. It could be that your heatsink wasn't re-seated properly when you fixed the clip. Also, the heatsink fan could be running too slow, or maybe not at all, especially if you happened to have accidentally unplugged it during your repair job.

You repair may have been fine, question did you use heat transfer paste?

thanks tedhall and OldPhil for your replies.
i had the heatsink bracket replaced at a shop. i asked him about the thermal paste and he said that as long as
the paste was still pliable and could be smeared, that it was still ok. apparently not, if it's the cause. i never got
him to say where to buy some either.

Personally, I think if you are re-setting the heat sink, it would be a good idea to clean off the old paste and re-apply new paste while you're in there because it's pretty critical to get a good heat transfer from the CPU to the heat sink, and the paste will assure that. As to where you can buy some, I buy the stuff from Fry's Electronics, but they aren't the only source of course. There are plenty of on-line sources if you don't have easy access to a local source. I also use a simple little program running in the background called "Core Temp" that monitors the CPU temp, which can be a valuable aid in determining if you do indeed have a problem with overheating. It can be set to warn you if the CPU is running too hot. It's a freeware utility that I found on line, and I'm sure there are other similar utilities out there.

While the heat sink may not be the source of your problem of course, I think it would be worth your time to at least eliminate it as the culprit if you computer continues to shut down without warning.

I think your current problems are getting muddled with your previous problems.
Forgetting the problems before you got the heat sink fixed.

Does your system randomly shut off by itself?

If it freezes and you have to shut it down manually, I do not believe it is a heat problem with the cpu.

Your system info says the mobo was replaced a year ago. Are you using the correct drivers for the new mobo?

I've had problems with AVG slowing my system up in the past. For troubleshooting purposes try removing all AVG traces and install Avast! free edition. Do not run the system on the Internet without a anti virus solution in place!

no,it never shuts off by itself.
i had the mobo and hdd replaced at the same time at a professional business systems company from which i also purchased

the win xp disk because i didn't get one when i bought the computer. there were two disks with it: "2010 drivers". as far

as i know, these are the correct drivers. is there a a way to check for correct drivers?
as far as avg, when i upgraded from avg antivirus to avg internet security 2011, i could immediately tell the difference

in the way it operated but once i got used to it, i was well satisfied. if avg were the problem, wouldn't the overall

performance be slow?
these occurrences are very erratic and last sometimes for hours. this is the rundown of occurrences since i first thought

about looking in task manager (after a clean install of windows- fri 8-26-11, which was neccessary because of problems and

loosing my internet connection after trying to download nvidia driver. probably the cpu thing was the cause of that):

8-30 download "quicktime" 80-100 %
9-6 cpu at 100% after several restart tries- hard shutdown
9-7 cpu back to norm
9-8 logon at 1530- cpu at 100% temp 204 F- hard shutdown- froze up on shutdown screen
restart at 1640- cpu at 100% still-shutdown
restart at 1740- cpu rate 0-5% but spikes to 30-60% when opening browser and then back to norm (0-5%) i seldom log off
9-14 1420- 100%- 1436 restart 0-10%
9-15 2040- 100% hard shutdown 2141- restart 30% for a few seconds then back to 100% hard shut down
9-16 0806- 100% hard shutdown
0817- restart 0-10%
9-19 0800- 100%
0845- restart 0-12%
1615- 100% hard shutdown
1720- tried restart but wouldn't boot
1900- start 100%- trieds shutdown but it restarted- "serious error has occurred" for some reason i didn't get

the specifics written down. sorry. hard shutdown
9-20 0819- 0-4% but spikes to 100% opening firefox or anything else. hard shutdown
9-21 1228- same as 9-20
9-22-24 same results
9-25 -10-12 no problems
10-13 1914- 100% hard shutdown
10-14 -10-15 same as 10-13
10-16 0928- 100%
1215- cpu back to norm

crazy, right?

my thoughts:
internet connection (have had problems because of suddenlink equipment, which they were supposed to have corrected)
graphics card
virus/malware
i'm not savy enough to do more than guess.
core temp says max temp has been 208 F. how much heat is too much?

thanks, joe for the reply and suggestion. i hate to disable avg but will if needed.
sorry for the length of this post. i hope it makes sense.

charlie
