I'm pleased to report that I'm typing this on the fixed computer that is now back connected to the internet
I'm not sure if Win Fixer is completely gone, there are references to it in the startup items but the C:\Program Files\WinFixer 2005 folder is empty. I ran killvundo.bat from a dos prompt but couldn't read the screen before it went blank. This didn't cure the problem, and virtumundobegone won't run under ME.
I then restored the registry to the version before the problem started and that fixed it.

Many thanks for your advice and I am pasting another hjt log below, this time in normal startup mode, before restoring the registry. I will do adware and virus scans and general tidy up but is there anything else to worry about ? I think I can delete the winfixer entries with sysinternals autoruns.

Cheers,
Lou

Hi Lou,

I am pasting another hjt log below, this time in normal startup mode, before restoring the registry.

Could you post a fresh HijackThis log to see where we're at now? I don't see anything major and it appears Vundo is gone. WinFixer itself is not all that hard to remove, it's basically an independent rogue program that can be uninstalled via Add/Remove (which would explain the empty folders). It's the desktop Hijack and vundo that is a pain and as you've found out the automated removal tools don't work on ME. I suppose the reg restore fixed it, but if you are still getting popups we can look further so let me know.

Do please post back with a fresh log tho as there are some minor adjustments to make.

It may be a while before I can get another hjt log as I don't have access to the computer at the moment (it belongs to my neighbour).

OK here is the latest log, have done some more tidying up and things seem to be working a lot better.
I know there is no antivirus shown here, I loaded AVG after spotting this but forgot to get another log.
Cheers,
Lou G

OK, you're in pretty good shape. If you still had vundo present you would be getting popups. Just a few items to clear.

Scan with HijackThis and check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...fo/bt_side.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...arch.yahoo.com/
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/12838be1816f2a...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Close any other open windows and click Fix Checked.

Reboot for the changes to take effect.

Be sure to run a full system scan in safe mode with AVG. Wouldn't want your neighbor to fall victim to the Nyxem/Kama Sutra trap:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...=0&#entry230958

Then post one last log for me to check and let me know how it feels to you..
