I have been inundated with all kinds of pop-ups from www.free6.se and www.lassekongos.com/sperm.shtml and 194.237.110.186/randomsites/banner.aspx. Everytime one of these pop-ups come up...it downloads a Trojan. I have tried Adaware to no avail. I ran Hijackthis and this is my log.

Please help me!!

Hi champagn,

I'll gladly review your log but I need you to do a couple of things first:

You are running HijackThis from a temporary folder. When run from a temporary folder, the backups HijackThis
makes may accidentally get deleted, so please put HijackThis into a permanent folder.
Full instructions on how to do this can be found here:Detailed Explanation
Brief instructions for this are:
  • To create a permanent folder:
  • Click My Computer, then C:\
  • In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
  • That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
  • Now you have C:\HJT\ folder.
  • Put your HijackThis.exe there.
You have not posted a complete log and are missing the top 4 lines.
Please run HijackThis from its new folder and post a full log here.

Hi champagn,

Thanks for posting the new log however, it now shows that you have a couple more things to do before we can give you an accurate fix for your malware. Please do the following tasks and post a fresh log here.

Your log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed.

You are using an outdated version of hijackthis. Please download the newer version.
Download HijackThis from: HijackThis Download Site

Run the new version of HijackThis and post a fresh log here.

Hi champagn,
Hope you're getting on alright with the updates. I thought it might make things a little easier if you did the following fixes. Please post a log when you have done these then continue with the updates and post a log when you have finished them.

You are infected with a variant of CoolWebSearch.

Download CWShredder from here
After you download the program, unzip it into a directory.

REBOOT into SafeMode: Starting your computer in Safe mode, use the F8 method

Make sure all browser windows are closed and run cwshredder.exe to start the program and click on the FIX button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.

Reboot your machine normally.

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button and when complete
Put a check beside all of the items listed belowR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://mypoiskovik.com/sp.htm
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://mypoiskovik.com/sp.htm

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs
This is an optional remove - If you are not using the Vaio support agent then I would suggest that you remove this.

Close all open Explorer windows and browsers
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When complete and all files removed, close the application

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:
How to see hidden files in Windows

As for the other question you asked at the end of the other post about if I dowloaded that one thing and what is it for....I honestly have no idea what that is.

So does everything look good with this now?

Hi champagn,

Your log indicates that you are still not fully up-to-date with your Windows XP operating system and you still haven't updated your HijackThis software. Both of these must be done as a matter of urgency and before we can continue to help you clean your machine.

Please go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When it's done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed.

You are using an outdated version of Hijackthis. Please download the newer version.
Download HijackThis from: HijackThis Download Site

When you have finished the Windows and HijackThis updates then:Run the new version of HijackThis and post a fresh log here.

Hi champagn,

The Windows updates are now showing on your log so that's good. One minor thing you could do for me before you run the fix below is to put the hijackthis.exe in its own folder or where it was before. This will protect the backups that hijackthis makes from being accidentally deleted. If you needed for some reason to go back to a previous situation then you can be sure that the backup will be there.

Just one optional and a couple of others to fix and your log is clean. Well done.

Run HijackThis
Click on the Scan button and when complete
Put a check beside all of the items listed belowO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs This is part of Sony's Vaio support agent. If you do not use the Vaio support facilities then I recommend that you check this to be fixed.

Close all open Explorer windows and browsers
Click on the "Fix Checked" button
When complete and all files removed, close the application.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:Understanding and Using Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update Site regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
