I can not get IE to connect through to the internet. I have downloaded FireFox and Netscape and they both have no problems connecting up. Connectivity is thru a cable modem. I have followed the instructions as requested. Below is the log from HijackThis. Outlook will not show any email that is HTML. It will not pull in the images. Something has hijacked either my Winsock or is blocking IE's connection. Can anyone provide me some guidance in correcting this issue?
Thanks

Hi Nappy Dad

I need you to follow the below instructions:

Firstly you need to

Disable SpySweeper:

You have SpySweeper installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options>Uncheck "load at windows startup"
  • Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck" home page shield".
  • Uncheck ''automatically restore default without notification".

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpySweeper again.

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware:

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware
  • Click on Tools, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Then

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\Program Files\NetRatingsNetmeter\NetMeter\NielsenOnline.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NetMeter] C:\Program Files\NetRatingsNetmeter\NetMeter\NielsenOnline.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.comcast.net

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============
Locate in windows explorer
If unsure how to find follow these instructions:Press Start
Select all programs
Press Accessories
Select Windows Explorer
and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

If unsure how to follow the below instructions:

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon.
  • Select the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Folder Options".
  • After the new window appears, select the "View" tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Display the contents of system folders."
  • Under the "Hidden files and folders" section, select the button labeled "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types".
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files".
  • Press the Apply button.
  • Press the "OK" button
  • Close "My Computer".
folders...

C:\Program Files\NetRatingsNetmeter

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes. Thanks.

Thanks for the assistance in fixing my situation. I followed you instructions and I am still unable to get IE or Outlook to connect up to the internet and pull content. FireFox works great and so does Netscape. But IE will not render anything. The icon just waves and waves... I also noticed that I can't print anymnore to the printer connected to my desktop PC... It just keeps getting worse.

Here is the HijackTHis log after I made the changes you suggested and rebooted. I'm open to anything you can suggest. I'm hoping I don't need to totally format and reload my PC. That would totally suck...
Thanks
Nappy Dad

Thanks again for the assistance in fixing my situation. I followed you instructions and I am still unable to get IE or Outlook (not Outlook Express) to connect up to the internet and pull content. FireFox works great and so does Netscape. But IE will not render anything. The icon still just waves and waves... I also noticed that I can't access my desktop over the network anymore. I'm guess I must have a virus or something that has blocked window's access to the network. Would not that explain why windows explorer & IE cannot access anything? That's my novice guess as to what's gone wrong...

Here is the HijackTHis log after I made the changes you suggested and rebooted. I'm open to anything you can suggest. I'm hoping I don't need to totally format and reload my PC. That would totally suck...
Thanks
Nappy Dad

Hi Nappy Dad

Thanks for the latest log and information.
-----------------------

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Please post the ewido log. Thanks

Thanks again for your assistance. I have ran the ewido scan and have posted the reports below. I'm guessing my problem may be virus related because I can not access any of the PCs on my home network. Along with not being able to access the internet using IE or OUTLOOK. However what I can't seem to figure out is why I can access the internet with both Firefox and Netscape browsers. This is becoming very puzzling. I'm guess it my be some "denial of service" type of hyjack. Any suggest on how to remove or correct this are always welcome. Thanks.

Thanks again for the assistance.

I backed the registery and applied the change as directed.
I downloaded the IE6 install file and when I executed it I received the following message.

I really at a loss regarding what to do.

I did not uninstall OUTLOOK because I did not want to lose all my content and settings.
Howw do I preserve my content? Is there some database file I can saveoff to another directory before I uninstall OUTLOOK?

Here is the current Hijack Log

When finished reboot the computer.

Then try installing IE6 again.

Regarding Outlook

Howw do I preserve my content? Is there some database file I can saveoff to another directory before I uninstall OUTLOOK?

I looked for anything Internet Explorer related in the Add/Remove Programs are and found nothing.
See Below. I still can not install IE6. I keep getting the same message that another version is already installed. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Joe

I had the same problem.. And after pulling most of my hair out for two weeks I got it solved... In using FireFox, I installed Fresh Download... This broke IE and OUTLOOK... After uninstall Fresh Download all is back to normal!!!
