Apple just announced that iOS 5 will be available for download on October 12th. This new iOS version will be supported on iPad, iPad2, iPod Touch (3rd and 4th gen), and the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. Some of the new features include:

  • Cards App - Allows you to create greeting cards that Apple will print and send out for you. $2.99 in the US and $4.99 elsewhere.
  • Notifications - Updated notifications from all your apps.
  • iMessage App - Allows you to send messages between any other iOS 5 device regardless of their connectivity.
  • Reminders App - A todo list that is location aware.
  • Twitter - Tighter integration with Twitter.
  • Newsstand App - All of your magazine subscriptions stored in one spot. This app will download news issues silently in the background.
  • Updated Camera App - Double-tap on the Home screen button as well as volume up to take a picture.
  • Game Center - Game Center is updated to support adding photos of friends, friend recommendations, and achievement points.
  • PC Free - The ability to activate and update your iOS device without connecting to a computer.
