I have been using the HJT forum and now need to back up essential data in case of disaster. Unfortunately I don't have original XP disks or any recovery CD's and don't have the $66 company said they wanted for them!!!

Can anyone give me some help with backing up files as I'm not exactly sure how to do this properly and feel much safer when someone gives me detailed instructions on how to do things without stuffing up any further.

I have a compaq presario AMD Athlon XP 2600+
2.13GHz 192 MB of RAM
Running Windows XP Home Edition

Original problem that sent me to HJT forus was a 'scan' trying to install at every startup, says it needs a disk (dosen't state which one), can only be stopped using Task Manger. I had this same problem last year and after removing some nasties using same forum all was fixed, I was told this time i am corrupted and need XP disk to fix.

Hope someone can understand all this nonsense and give me some assistance
thanks

Fred Langa's site gives a good breakdown on the safest and most effective ways to backup your system.
