Hey,

My inet searches (google, yahoo, etc.) are being redirected in Mozilla and Chrome. Windows 7. The methods that I have read about have not helped. I haven't yet been able to identify precisely what I have.

Malwarebytes (updated, full scan), SuperAntiSpyware (updated, complete scan), Spybot (updated) and AVG (updated, full scan) are unable to detect what I have (just some tracking cookies, which were eliminated).
Hijackthis doesn't show anything obviously problematic, but I'm rookie on that.
I've run Rkill - which does not finding anything - followed by repeating the above scans, still no detection.
Ran MicrosoftFixit to reset HOSTS file.
Ran GooredFix – Gooredscan finds nothing, while the Gooredlog does list some firefox extensions.
Ran TDSSKiller - nothing found.
%systemroot%\Temp files deleted, except one (cannot delete because file is open in PING.EXE error msg - I am not running CMD ping commands at the time).
Temp Inet files deleted.

Still redirecting. Help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome.

Are you on a router? Are other machines on it,if so are they redirecting?

Do you use Firefox?

What is the operating system>

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.
How do I get help? Who is helping me?For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear....Become a BleepingComputer fan: Facebook

Thanks for the hand.

Windows 7 x64. Both Firefox and Chrome. I am on a router, as are others, but this also occurs for me when connected to a different router. If I see anyone tomorrow, I'll ask them, but given that this happens to me on both routers, it doesn't seem likely that both would be identically infected.

On reboot, AVG just found luhe.fiha.a virus, which it successfully cleaned. That hasn't solved the problem, though. Rkill finds nothing after reboot.

MiniToolBox gives an error msg when running the List IP Config test:
"nslookup.exe - Ordinal Not Found
The ordinal 1108 could not be located in the dynamic link library WSOCK32.dll."

Other than that, the tests complete. The log is below:

Also, FYI, PING.exe is acting suspiciously. It has previously prevented me from removing some temp files and it takes up all available CPU cycles unless I suspend it in Resource Monitor. If the process is ended, it starts back up again and then starts eating cycles again. Suspending it doesn't eliminate the redirect problem.

Hello,, lets run these as we may have off shoots of that luhe.fiha.a virus.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.6.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to these[/color] instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to redownload TDSSKiller and randomly rename it before downloading and saving to the compute

Before your reply I found some suspicious programs and removed them (Smileyface and Atlal (sp?) Browser Improvement listed in program files). No obvious help resulted.

I've run TDSSKiller before (mentioned in the original post) and found nothing. I've rerun it, still nothing. The current version is up to 2.64, fyi.

ESET run with requested options: after an hour of scanning, AVG picked this up: Trojan horse Dropper.Generic.BFEZ and the Luhe.Fiha.A. Both cleaned by AVG. ESET scanner was the thing infected. ESET then proceeded to find and clean many items, but the redirect persists, sometimes accompanied with a new tabbed popup.

Reran TDSS, nothing found.

I couldn't effectively boot Windows this morning because of security 2012 and a few hundred other startup items which completely overloaded my system. Launched in Safe Mode. MalwareBytes found and cleaned 431 infected files. I'd post the log, but it's a thousand lines long. Let me know if you want it.

Still getting redirect and ping overload (which has been temporarily solved by suspending - not closing - ping.exe in resource manager).

Hi, thanks for the update tip,I forget to chenge them sometimes.

Are you on a router? Are other machines on it,if so are they redirecting?

If you have not installed a Custom HOSTS file let's reset it.
Your HOSTS file may be infected.
Reset the HOSTS file
As this infection also changes your Windows HOSTS file, we want to replace this file with the default version for your operating system.
Some types of malware will alter the HOSTS file as part of its infection. Please follow the instructions provided in How do I reset the hosts file back to the default?

To reset the hosts file automatically,go HERE click the Posted Image button. Then just follow the prompts in the Fix it wizard.

OR
Click Run in the File Download dialog box or save MicrosoftFixit50267.msi to your Desktop and double-click on it to run. Then just follow the promots in the Fix it wizard.

If using FireFox it may be the Add ons/Plugins. try disabling them one at a time and see which one was at fault.

I've previously reset my hosts (initial post). Did it again, no help.

My housemates aren't around right now to check if this is a router issue. I'll take this to another network and router tomorrow and report back.

I feel we are probably just going to need a DDS log.

We need a deeper look. Please go here....
Preparation Guide ,do steps 6 - 9.

Create a DDS log and post it in the new topic explained in step 9,which is here Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs and not in this topic, thanks.
If Gmer won't run, skip it and move on.
Let me know if that went well.

Posted. Sorry for the delay. Gmer skipped due to x64.

I experienced the same issue on a 3rd network - it's not the router.

Now that your log is properly posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a Malware Removal Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the Malware Removal Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the Malware Removal Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the Malware Removal Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another MRL Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.
