Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/421359 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hi M0le,

I am sorry it has taken me this long to respond. I had issues with gmer and kept trying to rerun it. Each time it would get to some point and just crash my computer. I would get a Windows message that my computer had recovered from a fatal error with the typical dialog to send info to Microsoft about the problem. The last time it took several hours to run and I thought it would finally make it through and it did the same thing. I gave up. If it helps any, the first time it ran (before it crashed) it showed about 10 listings that had something to do with IE.

What should I do at this point?

Thanks you kindly for your help.

Well, that seems clean.

Please run OTL, a scanner, next

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

I'm struggling to find any evidence of any malware and I even have the preknowledge that there has been some infection in the machine.

As boopme says in the other thread there is something about IE8 which means that more windows open than explorer.exe processes run.

IE8 runs each tab as a separate service, so if a tab crashes it does not crash the browser. There is also one extra for Ieframe.
The Ieframe is a dynamic link library allowing multiple programs access to IE.

The number of iexplore.exes in task manager should be the number of tabs open plus one which is what Process Explorer shows. The memory being used is not overly high so I would not be suspecting malware in that case.

Is this your problem in a nutshell?

The problem originally was that my PC seems to access IE pages slowly, sometimes painfully so. The time I opened this report I had a Google page open with multiple images of mops. At one point my PC slowed down so much that it took literally almost 10 seconds for me to get scrolling to even move. This went on until I shut down IE. I believe I had two pages open. When I reopened IE and went to look at the images again IE bogged down. I went to Task Manager to see what was going on and found the multiple instances and the 100 some meg memory usage of one page and like 70 meg of the second page. Interestingly, when I open multiple pages in Firefox I only get one instance of it in Task Manager and it doesn't use nearly as much memory as IE. That is what prompted my initial request for help.

I now have another problem that I would very much appreciate your help with. I am presuming that the three different thumb drives that I have are all probably infected with the original malware that Boopme found so using them will reinfect my system. Since ESET Online Scanner found the problems should I be replacing MS Security Essentials with ESET? What do you recommend to best prevent viruses/malware?

Thanks kindly,

MartyL

This is a difficult question because the ESET online scanner and MSE are different things. The MSE suite is a recommended security suite but their targets are different to the ESET program. ESET looks in a lot of places for the minor infections such as cached copies in java, the system restore folder and infected files. MSE is not used for this but for some rootkits, trojans and worms - some adware and spyware too.

I would suggest you keep MSE and use ESET online occasionally along with MalwareBytes. Two standalone options which can work alongside the suite.

Can you emulate the problem you are talking about with IE

Please download Process Explorer

Please open Process Explorer.

Select each of the iexplore.exe processes.

Right click them and select Properties, then the Services tab.

Under Services Registered in Process, you will find the Service and Display name.

Please take note of what these are and include it in your next reply.

Hi m0le,

I am sorry again that it took me so long to get back to you. I didn't get the email notification that you had replied to my last post.

I downloaded and ran ProcessExplorer. When I right click on the IE proceses and select properties there is no Services tab in the properties dialog.

Please download and run Process Explorer

If Process explorer won't execute rename it Iexplore.exe

Under File and Save As, create a log and post here

Copy and paste the log into your next reply
