Hello,
1st timer here.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
I have been lending my desktop to visiting students for about three years and now it moves at the speed salad grows.
It's an older Dell with Windows98 (Pent II) so it's not going to set land speed records I understand.
I ran CCleaner today and defragged.
This is my HJT scan. Please share any recommendations you may have for speeding up my pc.
Thanks in advance.

Hi & :thumbsup: to Bleeping Computer

Your HijackThis is an older version. Please download this self extracting file to your Downloads folder in My Documents: http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe
* Click the "Save" button.
* Navigate to "My Documents" > Chose "Downloads" folder. Once inside that folder click "Save".
* Now go to the folder you saved "HijackThis_sfx.exe" in. Double click "HijackThis_sfx.exe" and select "Unzip". When done click "OK".
* Close the WinZip self Extractor window.
* To find HijackThis go to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.

Once you have installed to latest HJT can you post a new log. Thanks
Mat2

I have been allowing visiting students to use my home computer and now is is just too slow.
Please take a look at my HJT log and let me know what you think.
It's an older Dell w/ a Pent II so maybe it's just time to upgrade? Not sure?
Thanks.

===============

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted.  (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
===============

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Hi

Thanks for the new log, here is the next stage.

==========

1. Insert a non-bootable floppy disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.
2. When you receive the "Non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready" error message, remove the floppy disk from the floppy disk drive.
3. Press F8, and then press F8. When you do this, the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed.
4. Select the Safe Mode menu option from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs (Start > Settings > Control Panal ) and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Web Related

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {BA224D00-9553-11d2-9D65-00A0CC22CBC4} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Restart windows back into normal mode.Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.
