Hi guys,

Yes, I'm yet another web-surfer with a PC with problems that stumbled upon ComboFix and didn't take seriously the warning to only run by direction of a malware expert. I found your forum/site by searching for why my Malware Bytes wouldn't run (it would crash out after beginning to scan).
This was the page I found http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and the instructions I followed.

I am trying to clean up a Toshiba Satellite A105 running WXP sp2.

ComboFix did in fact need to install the recovery console. All the steps and stages were followed and matched up to the point where it told me I had something really bad [sorry I forgot the name; it was possibly a rootkit] attached to the TCPIP stack. There was a window in which I needed to click 'okay' to continue, I did, and the console screen then read, "scanning for infected files...this typically doesn't take more than 10 minutes. However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double."

Now, I did heed the advice to not mess with the computer and let Combofix just do its thing. I left it go overnight, all the next day, and when I got home from work it was still on that screen. So, moved it to an end table, but still I left it alone. When I awoke the next morning, I discovered the laptop had gotten unplugged and the battery died at some point -- my cat may have tweaked out in the night and ran across the switch on the surge protector. Regardless, the screen never changed (for 48 hours prior to it dying). I never got a message that said it would mess with my clock nor did it show a message about 'completed stages.'

Anyway, after turning it back on, I did not find any log from Combofix. I tried to run Malwarebytes again. And it worked without crashing out. Then it found another 6 items. I cleaned them out and restarted. However, my computer is no longer able to acquire an IP address.

So, I thought maybe there was still something there on the TCPIP stack and have tried to run Combofix again (because Malwarebytes now shows nothing bad).
But, Combofix still stalls on the first screen and never goes into any 'completed stages.'

Is there any advice you can offer me as to why ComboFix doesn't get past step 1?

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then post them in a reply to this topic by using the Add Reply button.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the post and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the reply and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

Please note that I am not a member of the Malware Removal Team and will not be assisting you in removing the infection. I'm simply helping you to post the information they need in order to assist you.

Okay... The DDS (Step 7), like Combofix before, never finishes, never produces a logfile. :angry:
It has sat for 8 hours now, on the same screen (figure 5), despite it saying it "should not take longer than 3 minutes to complete." <_<

Please advise?

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:
