You guys saved me before and I'm hoping that you can help me again. I'm computer illiterate. I opened an attachment from a friend and ignored the "spam" warning from Trend Micro (I know, REALLY dumb but that's what I did...)

Now my only 2 security programs, Trend Micro (paid edition) and SuperAntiSpyware, (free edition) won't open. I get the message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file"

Out of desperation, I tried to uninstall and reinstall SuperAntiSpyware but that didn't work. When I try to open Trend Micro, their logo comes up on my screen and freezes on it. I tried to download Hijackthis and it started to run a scan but then shut down. I think that I saw:

"R3 URL hook (no name)" (but then the scan disappeared too quickly for me to see anything else.)

Whenever I try to download SuperAntiSpyware, the page redirects to sponsored links. I'm getting pop-ups, redirected pages, and all kinds of crap that I've never seen with Trend Micro and SuperAntiSpyware. Windows shows that I have current Firewall and Virus protection.

Can someone please help me ASAP? This is an office computer and I'm freaking out b/c I feel naked and exposed and have confidential info about clients on this computer. THANKS! -eileen

Hello EILEENNOLA,

Please do the following scans.

If you have a problem at any stage, let me know and continue with the next.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (v1.51) and save it to your desktop.

Download Link 1

Download Link 2Malwarebytes' may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet and double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to this Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • Malwarebytes will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • Under the Scanner tab, make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • When finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box, then click the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked and then click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows the database version and your operating system.
  • Exit Malwarebytes' when done.
Note: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning
.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • Security Checkup.txt
  • MiniToolBox Result.txt
  • MBAM Log
  • gmer.log
How is your machine behaving now?

Ratman (great name!) - I can't get past the first step, the Security Check. I downloaded it and it looked like it was gathering info. The I got an error message:

"Netsh.exe - entry point not found

The procedure entry point MigrateWinsockConfiguration could not be located in the dynamic link library MSWSOCK.dll"

Thanks for answering so quickly. -eileen

I ran the MiniToolBox but I don't see "GO." I saved the results to my desktop and some things look messed up. I got 2 error messages when it was running:

1. The same message as when I ran SecuurityCheck.ext "Netsh.exe- entry point not found. The procedure entry point MigrateWinsockConfiguration could not be located in the dynamic link library MSWSOCK.dll"; and

2. "The original 1108 could not be located in the dynamic library WSOCK32.dll."

Sorry, but can you explain how to find "GO" so that I can send you the MiniToolBox results? I really don't know what I'm doing here. thanks, -eileen

The Go button appears just below the checkbox list when MiniToolBox starts up.

R-man: I misunderstood you. I knew that "go" meant start the scan and it went through. I thought you meant that I had to hit "go" after the scan. Sorry.

I tried to copy to copy and paste the results 3 times here but this email won't go through b/c the page won't connect, or the site it busy, etc. and when I try to resend, it won't go through. I'm praying that this one went through.

Can I copy and paste the results? If not, would you please explain how to "post the result (Result.txt?) and that a copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run. I know you're probably frustrated, but I am totally clueless about computers and the jargon. thanks, -eileen

Hi,

Please copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Do this for all logs etc unless I advise otherwise.

Sorry my instructions were not as clear as they could be.

Hi Eilennola,

Can I copy and paste the results? If not, would you please explain how to "post the result (Result.txt?) and that a copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Sorry, let me try and bypass the jargon and explain better.

After you run each tool a file will be saved to your desktop - by the name given in each stage.

For the MiniToolBox scan the file is Result.txt.

To post that in your next reply, double-click on the desktop icon for that file.

This should now open in Notepad.

With your cursor active(move cursor into the Notepad window and click) , Press Ctrl and A at the same time.

This should highlight everything in the Notepad window.

Now Right-Click and select copy.

To Post in your reply click where you would like it to appear and then press Ctrl and V at the same time.

If you have any problems running any stage please let me know and carry on to the next stage

Ratman (wow, that was just added to my spell check) - Sorry you had to dummy down your instructions to me. My computer is @ my office so I'll do what you told me to do on Monday. I don't have a computer @ home, just a "smart" phone that's too smart/advanced for me. Hopefully there's an EVO forum b/c I'll need help with that as well. Thanks & have a good one. -eileen ("NOLA" - New Orleans, LA)
