Not sure if I am in the right forum.

HP Pavillion g7 pc laptop
Windows 7

I don't have a virus but I got this strange phone call today out of the blue and would really like to know if it was legit.

The caller said he was from microsoft "windows support" and that my computer was sending out (malicious) activity/messages and I needed to fix it. And if I didn't fix it, my computer was doomed for sure. He knew my name; my home phone number; my mailing address and town I live in and of course he said he could tell me my computers unique address. He could not tell me what windows operating system I had when I asked him to further identify what I was using.

I couldn't quite understand him because he had a heavy foreign accent so I asked to speak to another tech which was no help - they both had a heavy (Indian?) accent.

I was suspicious so I asked for a phone number so I could call back and verify who they were. The number he gave me was 408 786 5612; the area code says California....(?).

I told him I would run a scan to check for spyware, malware and virus's myself and he could call me back tomorrow to which he agreed. I followed through with my own check and found nothing. I am a little afraid to since I don't know who they are.

Does anybody here know what is going on with this guy calling me? Is he after something or could he be really from Microsoft? He said it was a free service but needed my to turn on my computer and he would instruct me on what to do. What do you think?

The information that he knew about you is all relatively public, I would assume that this was illegitimate. A quick google search of the number reveals numerous people receiving the same mysterious call. I advise to ignore any further calls.
