I suffered a pretty bad malware attack recently. I was able to recover almost completely, but still have one major hurdle. I have no networking with other computers.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3. My antivirus is AVG. My malware removal tools are a combination of SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes anti-malware.

The viruses got pretty bad this time and I had to use ESET on-line to get rid of them all. Not to mention TDSSkiller to get rid of some rootkit stuff.

Almost everything now SEEMS okay, but I am willing to run any additional scans or programs that anyone would reccommend.

Again, my remaining problem is while I do have internet access, I have lost the ability to network with other comptuers on my home network. They can all still each other, but they cannot see the "problem computer" nor can the "problem computer" see the network.

The error I am getting is "Unable to Browse the Network. The network is not present or not started."

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the Client for Microsoft's Networks. I have tried the network setup wizard. It seems to me like a service is not starting or has become damaged somehow, but I am not sure. I also noticed that I have a "Microsoft Tun Miniport Adaptor" now listed in my device manager. I do not remember seeing this before. It has an exclimation point in a yellow triangle indicating it's not working properly. My NVIDIA nForce Networking controller is present and working normally and I do have internet access over my high speed DSL. I cannot uninstall the Tun miniport without altering the registry because it says it's necessary for start up. When I did successfully delete it (by altering the registry), it just reappears on reboot.

Okay, there it is! Anyone care to take a stab at this one?

Thanks,

Todd

Open a command propmt and run this command: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
That will reset the TCP/IP stack back to the default.

Can you do a scan with the mini toolbox as show in the pinned please read in the network forum and post it here? Also double check the following services by typing services.msc in Run form the start menu. Computer Browser, Server, and Workstation...they have a status of started and a startup of automatic.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the services.msc applet and two of the three sevices you mentioned, while set to automatic have not started, nor will they start.

Server is running.

Computer Browser won't start - the error says "Could not start the Computer Browser service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Workstation won't start - the error says "Windows could not start the workstation on the local computer. For more information review the System Event log. If this is a non-Microsort service, contact the service vendor, and refer to the service-specific error code 2250." I am not sure where this "System Event log" is? Hopefully the minitoolbox catches this. I ran it after trying to start the services manually.
