Hello. The problem started while i was surfing on the web. The little red windows shield popped up telling me that my firewall wasn't on and to click the bubble to fix. I just ignored it and went into the control panel and clicked on the firewall aplet. It said this in a error box "windows firewall cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service?" If I click yes it then says "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service." I checked the internet connection properties and it was still selected to "Obtain an IP address automatically" but when I click on the details it shows a "169." IP instead of the usual "192.168" IP address.

I restarted in safe mode an tried to run Malwarebytes. I was then prompted to pick a program to open the associated file with. So my EXE's are hijacked I'm assuming...

Download and run exeHelper.

  • Please download exeHelper from Raktor to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
  • Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

=================================================================================================

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

It looks like we have a rootkit there.

Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

It called for a reboot but nothing happened once the comp restarted. The log was where you said it would be though..

Please download Rootkit Unhooker from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (.exe file)
Link 2 (zipped file)
Link 3 (.rar file)In order to use this tool if you downloaded from either of the second two links, you will need to extract the RKUnhookerLE.exe file using a program capable of extracing ZIP and RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can download, install and use the free 7-zip utility.

  • Double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to start the program.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check Drivers, Stealth, and uncheck the rest.
  • Click OK.
  • Wait until it's finished and then go to File > Save Report.
  • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the report into your next reply.
-- Note: You may get this warning...just ignore it, click OK and continue: "Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself! It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?".

Good :)

How is computer doing?

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

unfortunately the same. still not able to connect to the internet.
When I first turn on my computer I go to control panel > security center. the green light next to the firewall is on. Then at the same time as the little red shield popping up in the lower right corner of my screen saying "your firewall is turned off, please click here to fix" , the red light next to "firewall" in my security center goes on. When I try to turn it back on it says "We're sorry the security center could not turn on windows firewall......" it goes on to tell me where the firewall dialog is.
When I go to control panel > firewall, I get this "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service"

What are ya thinking?

Make sure, your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Go Start>Settings>Control Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista and 7, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista and 7), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista and 7)
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista and 7):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.

well it took awhile but I made it through your steps. Unfortunately the comp is still not connecting.

none of the steps worked. When I got down to the last step (dial-a-fix), here are the errors that came up:

error 2147467259 while trying to unregister c:\windows\system32\msxml3.dll. the error text is: unspecified

error 2147024891 while trying to unregister c:\windows\system32\moweb.dll the error text is: access is denied

error occurred during register of c:\windows\system32\moweb.dll(version)

(tells me to run "repair permissions" in the tool dia and need secedit.exe to do that)

error registering c:\windows\system32\wuapi.dll my version is 7.4.7600.226

error 127 c:\windows\system32\imgutil.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt. (tells me to contact Djlizard to make an exception for my version 8.00.6001.18702)

error 127 c:\windows\system32\iesetup.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt.

error 127 c:\windows\system32\inseng.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt.

error 127 c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt. my version is 8.00.6001.18928

error 127 c:\windows\system32\msrating.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt. my version is 8.00.6001.18702

error 127 c:\windows\system32\occache.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt. my version is 8.00.6001.18923

error 127 c:\windows\system32\pngfilt.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt. my version is 8.00.6001.18923

error 127 c:\windows\system32\webcheck.dll is not registerable or DLLInstall-able or file is corrupt. my version is 8.00.6001.18702

Then I clicked on the hammerhead. On Reinstall BITS it asked me for my windows sp2 disc, which I did not have so I hit cancel. I went ahead and tried the rest, ! at a time and they all went through without asking for disc.
I restarted computer and "this connection has limited or no connectivity" bubble still comes up. When you click on it and go into the support tab of of the status box, you can try to repair. at that point the "your computer might be at risk" bubble pops up from the lower right. Telling me that no firewall is on and to click the bubble to try and fix. Instead I try to repair connection. "windows could not finish reparing the problem because the following cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address"

so that's where I am at..

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan:

On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply:

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.
