I can't do a restart. When I select restart, Windows shuts down and when the PC boots, it sounds like it is restarting but it doesn't start. I need to hold the power button to completely turn it off in order to start it up.

Moved from Win 7 to Internal Hardware.

System manufacturer and model?

What you describe (my interpretation) sounds like what happens when auto updates are on and Win 7 is loading them.

Or...a typical Windows shutdown issue, see MS Documentation.

I built this in may 2006.Microsoft Windows 7 Professional , 64 bit
Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600
RAM: 4095 Mb
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4

It was not in the process of doing any Windows updates.
The MS lin was referring to Windows XP. I am running Windows 7.

Have you installed any programs recently? Or drivers?

Shutdown issues...the generalities are pretty much the same for all versions of Windows, IMO.

You can do a search for specifics re Win 7 shutdown issues, but i don't think you will find much that is useful.

Not that I can remember. I will try a system restore from a few weeks ago and see if I still have the problem.

Tried a couple of restore points but problem is still there. I noticed that when doing the restart that after it shuts down and the it tries to start up the the hard drive activity light does not come on or flicker.

I will not start up at all now. It powers up but I get no post or HD activity. I tried a new power supply and nothing changes. Any ideas.
