Hello, and thanks for the forum. I've searched and found no straightforward solution to this, so here's my situation.

Windows XP Pro on Toshiba M400 laptop. Sometimes startup and turnoff take too long, but most programs are running okay. On checking the Task Manager's Processes tab shows (with no programs running) high, bouncing activity on services.exe. I've attached two screenshots of that.

I have run AVAST full scan and then on the boot scan, the machine was unresponsive. Cold boot and I'm back to same condition. Comodo System Cleaner has been run on the registry file.

Thanks in advance for help on this mysterious process using my cpu.

Thanks for asking, Allan.
Avast found one virus on a full scan (Threat:Agent:Java-MF [Expl] which it moved to chest), then it recommended I schedule a boot-time scan. After the boot-time scan, the computer hung on restart - Instead of windows loading completely, there was some glitch and the screen was blank. No virus was found, however. I did another boot-time with no virus found.

When I turned on today windows did not finish loading and the screen was blank - computer unresponsive to CTL-ALT-DEL. Cold boot produced another unresponsive session but not until after successfully viewing a couple of web sites, using Adobe In-design, etc. Then I opened Adobe Photoshop, which made it unresponsive. The PS window was visible and I could move it around the screen, but there was no refresh outside the PS window making a cascading effect.

On reboot I was prompted to start windows in safe mode, etc. and I selected "Use Last Settings that Worked" or something along those lines. Now I'm computing "normally" but the services.exe process is still surging from 0 - about 25% (this my original concern.)
Thanks,
-David

Okay. I suggest you post in our malware or Am I Infected forums and let our specialists determine whether or not your system is still infected. It would have been better if you mentioned the infection in your first post.

Thank you. Looks like this has been moved to "am I infected" so I will see if we get more input from here. I thought if a virus was found and moved to chest, that it no longer would be causing mis-behaviors...
Please let me know if I need to re-post, and consolidate my information in the new post.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The fact that you are still having problems raises a red flag. No harm in making sure one way or the other. Meanwhile, please wait and a malware specialist will help you.

Hello,

And welcome to BleepingComputer.com, before we can assist you with your question of: Am I infected? You will need to perform the following tasks and post the logs of each if you can.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

NOTEMalwarebytes is now offering a free trial of their program, if you want to accept it you will need to enter some billing information, so that at the end of the trial you would be charged the cost of the product. Please decline this offer, if you are unable to provide billing information. If you want to try it out, then provide the billing information.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Download Link 1
Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

SUPERAntiSpyware:

Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free

  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are unchecked (leave all others checked):
    • Ignore files larger then 4mb
    • Ignore non-executable files

Now Perform the scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
    • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
    • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
    • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
    • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
    • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
    • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
    • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.[list]
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

SAS Portable
If you have a problem downloading, installing or getting SAS to run, try downloading and using the SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner instead. Save the randomly named file (i.e. SAS_1710895.COM) to a usb drive or CD and transfer to the infected computer. Then double-click on it to launch and scan. The file is randomly named to help keep malware from blocking the scanner.

Now GMER

GMER does not work in 64bit Mode!!!!!!

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic Full Scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning
.

All scans above should be performed in regular boot mode, and if that is not possible then I will post instructions in a follow up reply on how to get into Safe Mode to perform the scans. Also all scans should be COMPLETE and not quick unless specifically instructed to do so.

Thanks! Below are the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log and the Super-Anti-Spyware log. GMER crashed the computer once while unattended, then once (with devices unchecked) when I saw a blue screen flash too quickly to read, and then I booted in safe mode and the scan completed. The 600 x480 screen resolution in safemode was not large enough however for me to access the "save" button, so I have no log of that scan to my knowledge.

I was able on both of these crashes to excerpt the Windows "error report contents" when windows restarted. On the second time I also cut and pasted info from the splash screen. I am including these at the END of this post, after the SAS log.

Thanks again.

We need to know more about your BSODs...

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)

No installation required.

Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program and When scanning is done, go to Edit > Select All.

Then go to File > Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Compliments of Broni

Have you updated your RAID Drivers via Toshiba's website?

Thanks. No, I have not. I did suspect a driver problem from some research, so I reviewed their offerings. This machine dates from 2007. I did not want to start trying things, not knowing if it was the issue, and not being very confident in my driver-update-skills.

Maybe the driver has been corrupted? If I have to update the RAID Drivers, are the directions below correct for me (mine is not a "fresh hard drive")? This README is from the RAID Driver zip file...

<
Detailed Instructions for installing the Toshiba RAID Controller Driver on a fresh hard drive
=============================================================================================
1. Copy the contents of this archive onto a floppy disk.
2. Attach a USB Floppy Drive to the machine
3. Insert your Microsoft Windows XP Home/Pro Edition Bootable CD
4. When the initial setup begins, look for a message at the bottom of the screen that states, "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver..."
5. Press "F6"
6. In approximately 30 seconds, the setup will prompt that you have chosen to manually specify an adapter.
7. Press "S"
8. Setup will prompt you to insert the driver disk into the A: drive
9. Select the "TOSHIBA RAID Driver for Windows XP/Win2000"
10. Setup will return to the same screen as in step #6, but it will show that you have selected the "TOSHIBA RAID driver for Windows XP/Win2000"

Yes, I have now updated my RAID driver via the Toshiba website offering.

Services.exe is still surging CPU activity.

Okay. After updating the RAID driver I have now been able to run the GMER scan on the C: drive with all defaults checked and save the log. I cannot paste the log because it is too long for this forum.

Please let me know the best way to get the GMER log to you. I can e-mail, upload and send you a link, etc.

Thanks.
