Every once in a while, a popup originating from Testend online appears. Malwarebytes also keeps blocking IPs, so I'm a bit worried.

When searching for something on google, when I click one of the results, it is redirected to a different site. Very annoying and worrying. Yesterday, my Laptop wouldn't even start, and I had to use emergency restore, which set it back to the starting point, erasing all my files. I'm pretty certain I'm infected, but I have no idea what to do.

Thanks.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I can't disable McAfee Security Center. It seems that the information in the link provided is outdated.

You seem to have "hosts" file missing.
Let's double check.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

64-bit users go HERE
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Vista\Win 7 users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
  • Copy the content of the following box into the main textfield:
    :dir
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

That doesn't look too good. It's also worth noting that my internet is extremely slow and unstable at times. This started happening today.

I said it earlier already, but the reason I may be missing this file is that I did an emergency restore. Lost all my downloads and art etc in the process D:

Thanks for the help so far though!

We need to restore your "hosts" file.

Open Notepad.
Paste the following text into it:

# Copyright © 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Go File>Save As and...

1. Name the file hosts. (no extension; make sure there is just a "dot" at the end <--- VERY IMPORTANT!)
2. Make sure, "Save as type:" is set to "All Files (*.*)
3. File is saved to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder

Huh.

EDIT: Oh, my bad. Saved to wrong place. Now that I try though, it says I need admin permission. I AM the admin, so I don't know what to do.

EDIT2: Ran notepad as administrator and it appeared to work, but systemlook got the same result again.

First of all you downloaded wrong System Look file.
Go back to my reply #6 and download 64-bit version.

Then run my script again and post new log.

Good job :)

Is the pop-up still present?

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

Alright, first step of that done. 4,284 MB removed O_O

I'm worried about the second one. I can't disable McAfee Security Center, should I just remove it from processes and then restart my computer after completing step 2?

No you can still run Eset. It may be a bit slower.

You didn't say:

Oh, as for the popup, I haven't seen it yet but it appeared at very random times, sometimes even when I was doing absolutely nothing. Haven't seen it yet though. Downloading ESET now.

EDIT: "Can not get update. Is Proxy configured?" Appeared during ESET's removal/scan archive step. This might be because my internet is coming on and off randomly.
EDIT2: Working now. Reset router.
