Hello ... and thank you in advance for helping.
I suspect my laptop may have spectator or other similar tracking / spyware softwre on it. Would you please take a look at the dds logs and advise if this is the case? Laptop boots normally, is very slow and the internet connection cuts in and out. Many thanks, Rich

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/420165 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello spyware team, I am trying to determine if my laptop has Spectator on it, or another similar spyware program.
I am running 32 bit Windows XP Pro. I do not have a windows CD available however I do have the key code for the OEM installtion of Win XP Pro.
Laptop boots normally, is very slow and the internet connection cuts in and out.
Many thanks, Rich

Hello NYRich,

I will be handling your log to help you get cleaned up. I apologize for the delay but the forum is very busy. As you can see the logs we ask for are very extensive and take a lot of time to investigate.

Please subscribe to this topic. Click on the Watch Topic button, select Immediate Notification and click on proceed.

Please make sure Word Wrap in notepad is turned off. When copying and pasting logs paste them directly in the reply box. Only attach logs if asked to. Do not wrap logs in codebox or code tags. It makes it very difficult to read and analyze them. Please paste them directly into the reply box. Please do not make any changes to your system until we are through. Fixes are based upon information that is current from your system so any changes can affect our strategy. Please refrain from running any tools we may use without specific instructions.

If your operating system is Windows Vista or Windows 7 it may be necessary to right click then choose Run as Administrator any programs we use.

Because the e-mail notification system is not completely reliable, please check your topic once a day for responses.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you are having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not, please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thank you for your patience!!

---------------------------------------------------

We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from the following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

In your next reply please include the following:

OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Thanks!!
PW

Thank you for helping pw.
I believe that Spectator or a similar tracking / spyware program may have been loaded on my laptop about one year ago.
I want to determine if it is there or not.
Also, the internet connection (wired) is unstable and it cuts in and out.
This occurs when the machine is connected at home as well as in hotels while travelling; not sure if this is related to issue above.
I can confirm that my home cable modem and router are working properly.
So far, I have run Malwarebytes, and Secunia. I have read the reports and nothing shows up that I regognize to be harmful.
I recently uninstalled CA Antivirus, and installed Avast.
After we determine if there is spyware, then I am open to reformatting the drive or reinstalling Windows or whatever steps you recomend to make sure that going forward, this laptop is secure.
I would like to restore the system to its original new state to pick up some speed.
I do not have a windows XP disk however I do have the key code for WinXP pro on the bottom of the machine.
Thank you,Rich

Hi NYRich,

I would like to restore the system to its original new state to pick up some speed.
I do not have a windows XP disk however I do have the key code for WinXP pro on the bottom of the machine.
Thank you,Rich

I'm not familiar with that make and model of computer and I don't see a recovery partition on the hard drive. Most name brand pc's like Dell, HP, E-machines, Acer, etc., have a restore partition and/or restore software to restore the computer to factory defaults.

If you do not have a recovery option or the disk you should contact Systemax for a recovery CD.
http://www.systemaxpc.com/support.php

What I will do is make sure you are clean then send you to the Windows XP Forum where they can help with the slowness and connection problems and assist you with restoring your computer to factory defaults.

You do have a number of programs running at startup and in the background such as your HP software. The more programs/processess that are running means the slower your computer will run.

I notice you have LogMeIn installed. When you have any remote program on your computer make sure you have strong passwords in place. :thumbup2:

I don't see any signs of malware so far but we can run a couple of more tools to make certain you are clean.

Update Programs

Your Adobe Reader is out of date. Please go here to update. Uncheck the McAfee scan option

You may need to manually delete older copies of Adobe Reader via Add/Remove Programs.

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
  • If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Posted Image > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
  • The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
  • Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Step 2.

We need to run an OTL Fix
  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.

    :OTL
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No CLSID value found.

  • Push Posted Image
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click Posted Image.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

Step 3.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications as they will interfere with our tools and the removal. If you are unsure how to do this, please refer to our sticky topic How to Disable your Security Applications

Note - If you have CA installed, due to recent changes in how this AV targets the tool's internal files, it must be uninstalled before running ComboFix. If you have difficulty uninstalling the AV, download Opswat AppRemover http://www.appremover.com/supported-applications <----Important
Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • For XP users only, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Note: After running Combofix, you may receive an error about "illegal operation on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." If you receive this error, please reboot and it should disappear.

In your next reply please include the following:

OTL report
ComboFix.txt

Thanks!!

Hi NYRich,

Please rerun MBAM that appears to already be installed on your computer.

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware <--- Important!!
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

    Step 1.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 2.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check Posted Image and check Remove found threats
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

The log is located at:

C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt

In your next reply please include the following:

MBAM log
ESET report

Thanks!!

You now appear to be all clean.

We need to do a little house cleaning.

Step 1.

Re-enable emulation

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger might ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_enable which will appear on your desktop.

The following two procedures need to be done in the order listed. If you can not do so please let me know.

Step 2.

Uninstall ComboFix

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall Note the space between the X and the /U.

Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important functions.

If ComboFix asks to update please allow it to do so.

Step 3.

Please open OTL
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Cleanup" checkbox.
  • You will be asked, "Begin Cleanup Process"
  • Select Yes
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer.

You can now uninstall any other programs we may have used and delete any logs that may have been generated.

Most can be deleted by right clicking and choosing Delete. Others, such as ESET online scan can be removed via Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs

Step 4.

Here are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of them, however, by following the rest of them you will reduce the risk of becoming re-infected.

It is critical to stay up to date with the latest upgrades to your Operating System, as this can help prevent future problems. You can find microsoft updates here

I recommend that you visit the link above and either enable 'Automatic Updates' under Start | Control Panel | Automatic Updates, or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you keep your antivirus program updated and have the latest signatures to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Make sure you use a firewall. A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here. For most users the built in Windows Firewall is sufficient. Only use one firewall at a time though.

Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SuperAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates. Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide
a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions. I personally prefer and highly recommend the licensed version of MBAM.

Please read and follow How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again! as well as How to prevent Malware by Miekiemoes

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks!!

Question: should I keep and run ESET once in a while?

I would uninstall the current application and download a fresh copy when needed. :)

Anything else?
PW
