Posted 20 September 2011 - 09:24 PM

I discovered yesterday afternoon that links on my Google searches were being redirected. I also now have a second tab that opens when I open Firefox that goes to a random spam site. I looked up the problem and it looked like I had the Google Redirect Virus, so I tried to update and run my anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware, etc. programs.

I have Windows Vista on a Lenovo T61.
- Spybot updated and ran, but said that my computer was clean.
- Symantec Endpoint Protection will not allow me to turn on anti-virus / anti-spyware protection. LiveUpdate has never worked on my system, so I've been without Proactive Threat Protection since 2008, but usually the Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware protection runs. When I try to turn it on (click "fix"), the program goes unresponsive and does nothing.
- I updated AntiMalwarebytes, and now the program will not open. It gives me a message that says, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
- Windows Firewall was turned off, and the first three times I tried to turn it back on, the computer gave me the same message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I just accessed it from Control Panel to check again, and it turned back on. I have no idea what is different this time.
- Windows Defender is also out of date, but at this point I'm nervous about updating that since I've never used it before.

I have gone through the preliminary steps recommended on the forum, and while I could run the DeFogger program, I cannot get GMER to open -- it came up once, flashed the screen, and then disappeared. Now, when I click on the program, the same message as the others appears: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Also, this may be unrelated, but on Firefox, I no longer have the usual maximize / minimize / close buttons on the top right corner. They're still coming up when I open a new window. No idea why.

I usually can install / run programs to clean off the majority of viruses / glitches I encounter, but this one has me stumped. I have pasted the DDS log below.

Any suggestions would be most welcome! Thanks!

- SMH

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Please download DummyCreator.zip and unzip it.
  • Run the tool.
  • Copy and paste the following into the edit box:

    C:\Windows\1559749327
  • Press Create button and post the content of the Result.txt.

    Important: Restart the computer.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Gringo

Thanks for your help, Gringo!

I have downloaded, unzipped, and run DummyCreator; the first time I tried to do this, I think I unzipped it incorrectly and all the windows froze. I restarted my computer, deleted the file, and started again, and it worked fine.

Here is the log:

DummyCreator by Farbar

C:\Windows\1559749327 [21-09-2011 19:06:33]

== End of log ==

I will now restart my computer and continue with the directions.

Okay, I finished running ComboFix. While it was running, Windows generated a message that said: "Freeware implementation of XCACLS has stopped working. Windows will close program and notify you if solution is found." I clicked "okay," and things continued running from there.

Here is the log that ComboFix generated. Is there anything else I should do at this point? I would like to update and run my anti-virus, etc., but will wait until I receive a go-ahead from you to do that.

Thanks!
SMH

Greetings

Good That cleaned up some bad guys but I see some other stuff that we need to go after, so I want you to run this custom script for me.

Please do the following:

Step One
Please download Junction.zip and save it to your desktop.
Unzip it and extract junction.exe to your C:\ drive.

Step Two
Now copy (Ctrl +C) and paste (Ctrl +V) the text inside the code box below into Notepad.

@ECHO OFF
cd c:\
junction -s c:\>log.txt
start log.txt
del %0
Save it to your desktop as File name: junc.bat
Save as type: All Files

Step Three
Double click junc.bat to run it. A log will be presented. Copy and paste or attach the content of the log in your next reply.

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

File::
c:\users\Stephanie\AppData\Roaming\9D8F914A.reg

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Posted Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following

  • report from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now after running the script?

Thanks for your help! I downloaded and extracted Junction to my C drive and created the Notepad file you requested. However, when I click on junc.bat to get it to run, I get an error window that says, "Windows cannot find 'log.txt'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and try again."

Just to double-check: I have not clicked on the Junction application that unzipped, just on the Notepad file you had me create. Let me know if I've mixed these up and I'll try again.

Thanks!
SMH

Hmm. When I try to click on the Junction program, it flashes on the screen and then disappears. What should I do?

I moved the junction file to the C drive, but now the issue is that when I open the DOS-style prompt from CMD, it won't let me paste (it literally just types, "^V".) I tried typing in the command you sent me but then it says "Access is denied."

Should I try deleting the junction program and files and start it over, or should I try something else?

Okay, I deleted and re-extracted the Junction file to the C:/ drive, then copy/pasted to the CMD window. It says,

"'junction' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file".

???

I did, but it looks like it is carrying out the first command before it registers the third line, so the overall window looks like this:

C:\Users\Stephanie>cd c:\

c:\>junction -s c:\>log.txt
'junction' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

c:\>start log.txt
