I'm not sure what the issue is with this laptop. It is a Lenovo running Windows XP. It takes forever for the machine to boot. Once it finally gets done, it will hang and lock-up for a duration frequently. When it finally decides to allow things to click along again, warning boxes will show up with various "unresponsive script" errors. I have run Malwarebytes and it comes up with nothing infected, but the quick scan took 1 hr. 35 minutes to complete. Having just finished cleaning up my daughter's laptop, I know this scan shouldn't have taken this long. This machine is used primarily for email and internet access and there is very little stored on it, so I can't imagine why it took so long to get through the Malwarebytes scan. Any insight into what is going on here is welcome!

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

=============================================================================

Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

=============================================================================

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

=============================================================================

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I am not liking what I'm seeing in some of these logs. 100sexlinks.com? Am I correct in thinking that my laptop has been hijacked? Here are the logs. I await further instructions.

I am not liking what I'm seeing in some of these logs. 100sexlinks.com?

Hahaha...those are fine. this is a list of sites being actually blocked by your "hosts" file.

I don't see anything malicious.

Your computer could use another 512MB of RAM for better performance:

Total physical RAM: 502.42 MB

Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

The Temp File Cleanup is done, and the ESET scan log is to follow. It did find one threat. Here is the log.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\WinAgentrsp.zip Win32/Bagle.gen.zip worm

If what I understand from cleaning up my daughter's computer is correct, this is actually not a threat but rather a record of one that has previously been removed. Please let me know if I'm right on this or if I need to take further action against this worm.

You're correct.

1. Update your Java version here: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

2. Now, we need to remove old Java version and its remnants...

Download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.

==============================================================

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

=============================================================

Now let's try some test...

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

How is computer doing with the above settings?

After I updated Java, I kept getting an error with jusched.exe. As I continued with your instructions and disabled that at start up, I don't seem to get the error any further.

It took me FOREVER to update Adobe. I had to first update 8.3 before it would allow me to go ahead and install the X version which then deleted 8.3. That all appears to be good now.

As for performing the msconfig, the first attempt I made following your instructions resulted in all kinds of warnings from my machine. I had to go back and be extremely selective about the services and the start up processes that I disabled. Being a Lenovo, there are apparently quite a few IBM items that have to be left intact for the machine's peace of mind.

So far, the machine seems to be running somewhat faster, and the boot time, while still not that fast, it is better than before. It is going to take a a little time using the machine to see if the unresponsive script situation continues to occur.

Also, I have this little magnifying glass on the bottom right toolbar. When it is moving, there is some "indexing" going on. Whenever this occurs, the machine slows considerably. What is this, can I turn it off, and if so how?

Good news but.....those settings were for testing purposes only.
You can't run your computer in this state.
We'll need to try to find out what startup(s) is causing your issues.

For now, go back to "msconfig" and reverse all changes.

When done....

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

When I reestablished everything in msconfig, I immediately got the jushced.exe error again and the boot time was considerably longer. Getting rid of the overhead certainly speeds things along. Here is the link I uploaded from AutoRuns.

Re-run Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab and UN-check:

+ "Adobe ARM"
+ "Auto EPSON Stylus CX7800 Series on DAVID-TQ40Y2MZ6"
+ "googletalk"
+ "IgfxTray"
+ "iTunesHelper"
+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"
+ "UpdateManager"
+ "McAfee Security Scan Plus.lnk" (this can be safely uninstalled)
+ "Windows Search.lnk"
+ "MSMSGS"

Restart computer.

I followed your instructions, unticked the listed items, and then restarted the computer. I hope the changes applied because the boot was very slow and firefox keeps hanging. Further instructions are welcome.

This move apparently didn't do much. The boot time is still excessive, and the Windows XP splash screen hangs for a long time. Shut down is also extended and QCTrayWnd hangs. Once I am finally able to get back to the internet, speed from page to page appears to be slightly better, but that is the only noticeable improvement.

Reinstall Norton then.

You'll have to investigate manually.

Perform these steps again...

Last time you did it things were better.
If so start re-enabling startups and then services but only one item at a time, restarting computer each time until you'll find the culprit.

After much time and monkeying around, I'm not sure exactly what the culprit was. It may have been a combination of things. It is running pretty fast and clean right now. I took out of the start-up everything that I don't need, and also all of the Apple stuff out of the services since I do not use this machine for any Apple product interfacing. It is not hanging now, and I have not gotten any script errors. Hopefully it will continue to run as it is now. VASTLY improved from where it was when this process began.
