I went to a normal website I have used before for car reviews and got a blank screen instead of the normal one, then got a popup modal notification that some software (I don't remember the name)had been installed ( I had done no such thing myself). Immediately my browsers were redirecting from google searches to various commercial sites. Both Windows Security Essentials and Malwarebyte's Anti-malware on atttempting to run give "cannot access/permission denied" errors. Booting in safe mode made no difference. Process explorer and Gmer will not run even in safe mode, and permission was denied for the online scan from Trend Micro when I tried to run the downloaded applet. (The first time Gmer ran automatically on double-clicking for a few seconds and seemed to generate a report, but then when I ran it again with the options specified in your preparation guide it would not run - got a "cannot access, you may not have permission" message.) Other symptoms noticed: HWmonitor, a low level temperature sensor monitor for the CPU and HDs, now gives a BSOD. Also I completed a successful chkdisk on C: after booting from a PE disk I created, but on startup the normal way I now have seen chkdisk try to run on C but a message appearing that it cannot get direct access to C: and it aborts and bootup continues (windows load is much slower now than it was before infection however).

There is a process running in the task manager named 2537055480:127649640.exe, even in safe mode. I tried to kill this process with various versions of the Rkill program from your site but none seemed to do anything. I found two files in system32/drivers that were identified elsewhere as being associated with the vundo/virtumonde malware: logiflt.iad and lvuvc.hs. I deleted them, they did not reappear on reboot, but no behaviour change. There are some weird entries in \system32 generated since having this problem, eg DVCState-{00000000-00000000-0000000E-00001102-00000005-00211102}.rfx.

Attached and below are the 2 logs from DDS. These were generated in normal windows Xp mode. Thanks in advance for any help!:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
  • please Do not Attach logs or put in code boxes.
  • Tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
  • Tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
  • Do not run anything while running a fix.
  • Do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!

Click on the Watch Topic Button and select Immediate Notification and click on proceed, this will help you to get notified faster when I have replied and make the cleaning process faster.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

Thanks for replying - I followed all instructions closely. When I attempted to run ComboFix the following happened:

1. On double-clicking, it popped up a usage agreement dialog which I clicked OK to. It then started rapidly extracting several files. After about 1-2 seconds of this activity it appeared to quit (vanished from screen). After waiting a few more minutes I checked the task manager and ComboFix did not appear to be running.
2.I then tried running it again. This time I got the following modal message (the same one I get when trying to run any AV or anti-malware): "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access them." After clicking OK to close the dialog box nothing else happens.

One symptom not noted in my first post - a few times when I have left the computer idle for a while I have come back to find numerous requests for permission to save cookies (the little dialog boxes you see when you ask IE to ask for permission for cookie use by sites). Also a few times windows are open that do not appear to belong to any browser that show ads full-screen. I have to log off to get rid of them as they won't close the normal way and I am not sure what process to kill to get rid of them.

For x86 bit systems please download GrantPerms.zip and save it to your desktop.

Unzip the file and depending on the system run GrantPerms.exe or GrantPerms64.exe
Copy and paste the following in the edit box:

c:\System Volume Information
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\iExplore.exe
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\rkill.scr
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\WiNlOgOn.exe
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\7zS7A.tmp\Setup.exe
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\7zS7E.tmp\Setup.exe
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\7zS7F.tmp\Setup.exe
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\Scans\History\CacheManager\MpScanCache-1.bin
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\SRTSP\Quarantine
c:\Documents and Settings\Herb\Desktop\uSeRiNiT.exe
c:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
c:\Program Files\McAfee Security Scan\2.0.181\McCHSvc.exe
c:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\Antimalware\MsMpEng.exe
c:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Desktop(2).ini
c:\WINDOWS\assembly\GAC_MSIL\Desktop.ini
c:\WINDOWS\system32\MRT.exe

Click Unlock. When it is done click "OK".
Click List Permissions and post the result (Perms.txt) that pops up. A copy of Perms.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

I ran Grantperms.exe as instructed. After pasting in the text in the edit box and clicking unlock, the program ran for about 30 seconds to one minute. It then quit (disappeared), leaving no log file behind, but its icon persisted in the task tray for about 15 seconds and then it disappeared. When I tried to run it a second time, I got the "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access them." dialog box and the program refused to run.

Hello

Lets get a deeper look into the system and see if something shows up.

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTListIt.txt in your next reply.

Relieved to find that it actually ran, here is the OTL.txt file content. (One comment - I recently installed Adobe Reader 10, as I had read on your forum that 9 was open to virus attack. This install put the McAfee Security Center software on my system without asking. I used to have the business version of SAV installed but I uninstalled it a few months ago. Have been using Windows Security Essentials. I note in the log here that it can't find the hosts file - I did have an extensive one for ad-blocking, have not checked to see if it has been deleted by the malware.):

I ran OTL with the specified custom code, and it did ask for a reboot. Following the reboot the desktop icons did not reappear, only the open log file. I then saved the log file to the desktop and used task manager to log off my acount and relog in. That restored the desktop but now my network CP cannot acquire an IP addess - when I click "repair" I get the message that "windows cannot finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: renewing your IP address". DNS server I see is set to 192.168.0.1, my router address (internally in the LAN)and the same setting as my Internet-functioning laptop. I can see nothing wrong with the TCP/IP settings - auto DNS, auto IP, DHCP enabled.I checked the router and it shows the infected computer as being on the LAN along with the laptop. A reboot did not fix, and I did not want to do any more without getting your input - should I delete the network connection and create a new one? I know there is no problem with the router or internet connection as I am sending this via a laptop connected to the same router.

I have the OTL log file but am reluctant to use a pen drive to bring it over to this computer for pasting in this thread unless you OK it for fear of laptop infection ( I can't currently access the infected computer via the LAN).

In response to the first command entry you specified for trhe DOS window I got the following error messages:
In the CMD window: "Initialization function InitHelperDll in IPMONTR.DLL failed to start with error code 10107"
In a modal dialog box, labelled "netsh.exe - Entry point not found": "The procedure entry point MigrateWinsockConfiguration could not be located inthe dynamic link library MSWSOCK.DLL". Shoudl I now try your second command string anyways?
EDIT - after clicking OK in the error modal dialog I get the following additional error messages in the DOS box:
"The following helper DLL cannot be loaded: IFMON.DLL. The following command was not found: INT IP RESET reset.log"

i noticed that the dos box default directory is c:\Documents and Settings\Herb
