Dont know where it came from or what caused it but when I power up my gateway it hangs at the "windows XP" welcome screen.

Nothing happens from there.
The mouse pointer shows up and can be moved but nothing else.

I have gone into the boot men and tried booting from the install CD that came w/ this puter but that too stalls at thew same screen.

I tried opening task mgr. but that also fails.

I tried booting in safe mode and that to is a no go.

Everything stalls at the welcome screen.

I was runing "Mcafee" and "Ad-aware" but I think somthing has installed it-self anyway.

Anybody heard of this or know any other fixes I might try?

Try:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/en-us. You must know that you have System Restore working or access to a restore point in your System Volume Information folder. Also follw the steps exactly as described. It will take some time.

Have you tried any of the other options available when you select Safe Mode? Such as Last Known Good Configuration, etc.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
