My computer recently did an automatic update and afterwards my computer would not start. I am running Vista Home premium. When I attempted system restore it failed and gave message: Catastrophic failure 0x8000fff

I tried the repair again and the report said: Unknown Bugcheck: Bugcheck 50. parameters 0xc0842797, 0x0, 0x824ca956, 0x0

Can this be repaired without doing an entire reinstall?
