Well, I came home tonight to find my gf had got onto my computer and checked her email. Apparently there was a file in her yahoo spam folder from her old employer with a file to open. Which.... she did. It took her to a website for viagra, so she closed IE and shut the computer down. I have no idea what the file was, she doesn't either, it could have been an executable file...

I came home to open my computer and find no backdrop, and ALL program files gone. A System recovery window then popped up asking to start recovery of the system along with asking for a fee. All my firefox links in the task bar are gone. And going to any hard drives other than C are now gone. Not, not functioning, they're there, but rather they are not appearing. I finally opened up Control panel and got back into the C drive to run MalwareBytes and SpySoft S&D, both found items to delete. I then went into another file looking for firefox on the C drive and went into folder options, and the "hide folders" was checked. Upon clicking it to "show files and folders" all my F drive and D drive came back, but every file is shaded. I can open the files, but properties say they belong to another computer. Also I'm unable to access any of the administrative tools or anything in "my computer". I found the firefox program directory, but it opens up a program from 2008 along with all the bookmarks, etc etc. I'm at a total loss as to what to do, and an even bigger loss as to how to confront her about this! Grrr... I tried downloading the latest version of HiJackThis, but was told I didn't have permissions to download anything. So using the only version I have, 1.99.1 I turned the computer on and ran the program and have this log to post. Running Windows XP Pro SP3

Please help..... Thank you to whomever answers this.

Anybody? Posting this from my phone as I'm afraid to get onto my computer.

EDIT: Please be patient. There are over 130 unanswered topics in this forum at present and the current average wait time to receive help is 5-6 days. ~Budapest

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer! :)

I am Blind Faith and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are destined to idetifying the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce.

As a start we need to have some more up-to-date logs than the ones you have already provided. The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that step. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us.

If you will encounter a delay of over 2 days from me, please don't hesitate and private message me.
Do not forget to check your topic periodically and subscribe to the topic so that you can receive notifications regarding my replies.

Please generate another DDS log (download it from here if you haven't already) and post it in your next reply along with other changes that may have occured since you last posted.
Also download and run GMER from this link: GMER download link.

Thank you very much for your patience.

Regards,

Elle

Elle,

Thank you for the reply. Before all this happened I've been plagued with the google redirect bug which I've always just dealt with by clicking a link, then backing out of the page before it loaded, then clicking a link again. Seemed to work up until now. Anyways....

Before hearing from you, I did the following: I discovered that I had the P1kAlMiG2Kb7Fz.exe file on my desktop labeled system recovery which I suppose after running MBAM and SBS&D was disabled. While this stopped the scan from running it did not repair my system to normal. My F drive and D drive files are all still shaded as well as certain ones in the C drive. Also my quick launch shortcuts in my task bar have dissapeared as well as all the programs are gone from Start menu. I found pctools which I ran and then uninstalled. After tonight I'll only be taking your advice... Here is a copy of the DDS Logs you requested. I did edit the 3rd line which had my name in it to all X's. Thank you again.

Hi there,

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning
.

Hi there :) ,

We will now try to fix the problems found on your PC.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Been struggling to get ESET to not start. I can't access the program because it's out of date, all of the access tabs in the NOD32 are grayed out. It also won't let me shut it down via the program file in the task bar (which is the only way I know to open it). ComboFix is giving me a warning to continue at my own risk. "X"ing out of the warning just continues the program, so I'm shutting the computer down. Any idea's on how to kill it?

Hi there,

Even though Combofix warns you about NOD32, the fact that it is outdated means it is not working properly so it won't interfere with our tool. Please ignore the warning and go on with the instructions.

Thankyou for all the help thus far...
I'm beginning to wonder if my machine will be able to be repaired to the state it was before this happened...

Hi there,

We'll do the best we can. :)

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

FCopy::
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ctfmon.exe | c:\windows\System32\ctfmon.exe
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\schedsvc.dll | c:\windows\System32\schedsvc.dll
c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\termsrv.dll | c:\windows\System32\termsrv.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

So after doing this, run Combofix again and post the results?

Hi there,

You will need to drag the script over the file on your desktop, it will ran itself automatically. :)
If you do not do that, the tool will not be able to run the commands written in the script.
After it is done, post the log into your next reply.

Well, everytime I run combofix it says it's out of date and wants to update. This happened when I tried running it with the txt from notepad as well. Here's what it gave me though after it updated and started again. Don't know if I need to run it again to keep it from updating or if it matters?

Hi there :) ,

Can you please tell me how is your system working? What kind of problems are still up to date?
We are trying to see what is still left on the system.

My main symptoms are my desktop is totally black, what happened to my desktop image settings is beyond me. Also going into the windows start menu ALL programs are gone. The only thing listed is open office 3.0 which is also empty. There's also several folders on my C drive that are shaded. I can still access them but they dont appear as part of the computer. Also all my quick launch icons in the task bar have dissapeared. I finally found firefox in my f drive (which ALL files and folders are shaded) but opening it took me to a version from 2008. I dont know what happened to the version I was using the day before this happened, it seems my user profile is just gone! This all started instantly one day when I turned on the computer and was intoduced with a system restore program asking for a payment to register the program.
