Hi all! My network and internet are going very slow. They have been doing it for about a month or 2. My ISP checked and said everything was working right from their end. I finally broke down and bought a new router. I configured the settings the exact same way as my old router. Initially, everything was working fast. One day later and I am back to a crawl. It takes minutes to download something that used to take seconds. My xbox will not stay online because the connection is too slow. I cannot stream movies or music to any device without waiting for an hour or watching it skip the whole time. My speedtest shows ping=627ms, DL=.27Mbps, UL-.02Mbps. My DL used to be 5.0Mbps and my UL was close to 1.0 Mbps. Do I have a problem somewhere in my router settings? It would not be the computer if every other computer I have connecting is running just as slow? Would it? Thanks!

First so I can gauge your raw speeds go here and perform a test: http://www.speedtest.net and post a link or a pic of your results. :)

Typically if multiple computers are experiencing the issue it would seem to indicate either the network, router or ISP connection.
1) how many computers are connected?
2) are they all wireless?
3) try with only 1 computer connected and use a cat5 cord. This can rule out one computer causing the issue and also wireless issues such as channel congestion.
Sincerely,

Brian

Hi, I did as asked. There are 2 desktops and 2 laptops that connect to the network. Plus 2 xbox 360's a PS3 and iphones and itouches, and all wirelessly. I disconnected the router and all computers and attached my main desktop straight to the modem. There is no speed increase. Does that mean my modem is bad or just my ISP is jacked? Thanks!

I would call your isp and complain it seems to be on their end. Those speeds are almost slower than dialup.. Try a server that is closer to you if you can on speedtest.net.

Are you sure that no one is "stealing" your wireless signal and using your bandwidth without your knowledge? Do you have wireless security in place? If it's a possibility, from the wired computer, open your router config and turn off the wireless and check your speed again.
Sincerely,

Brian

Hi all, sorry for the slow reply. So anyways, I called my ISP. The day they came out, the internet was working almost normal. The person could not figure anything out, but he replaced the modem anyways. All was good for about a week. Now, I am at even slower speeds that it was before. I have run avast and it found nothing. I have a new modem, new router, and have disabled wireless settings and I am running one wired computer. Still crazy slow. Any other advice? Do you think I am just being throttled or, could I be being capped for a usage limit? They said they have no limit, and the only thing I have done is upload about 10 gigs of home videos to youtube. Thanks!

Change your DNS to 8.8.4.4 if your in the US. I did this once when my isp was being slow, and it worked out.

It's a good troubleshooting tool to check your router settings anyway...

I have now tried google and openDNS settings. None have worked. Thanks for the advice though! Anyone else?

The best way to test here is by wired connection and directly to the ISP modem/router. Have you tried resetting your modem? Most modem/router has a pinhole to press by a paperclip or pin. Another is cleaning of your cache or temp files. You could use free Ccleaner to help you. If anything is still not improving or close to your subscribed bandwith, try booting to safemode with networking to see if it makes a difference.

Jhayz, thanks for the reply. I have used CCleaner, I have booted in Safe mode, and I have reset my modem. Only problem I have is if I hook my modem straight to my computer it tells me there is something wrong with the dhcp settings. I am no genius, so I am not sure how to turn my DHCP off and the static IP off so the modem will just recognize my computer. Any help? Thanks!

When you try to open a browser you get a DHCP error, when hooked to the modem? What exactly is the error?

Maybe I was thinking of something else. Anyways, I tried hooking it up straight to the modem. I have Win7. After I hook it up, it comes up with an unidentified network and has a red x between network and internet. When I click troubleshoot this, it says "Local Area Connection does not have a valid IP configuration" I have the adapter settings on obtain both IP and DNS automatically. Not sure what to do to get it to connect.

Look into your device manager and expand network adapter, then right-click your ethernet card/properties/advanced tab. Check Flow control should be enabled. Large send offload v2(IPV4 and IPV6)should be disabled. Any protection software might also cause the issue.
