Posted 09 September 2011 - 05:00 AM

I got hit with one of those pretend-antivirus malware attacks. I suddenly got a pop-up screen warning me about all sorts of porn-y virus infections on my computer and prompting me to purchase the full version of their "antivirus" software. It did all the usual things everyone seems to report: disabling antivirus/antimalware software & initially most other programs, as well.

I managed to locate defender.exe & remove it. That stopped the pretend-antivirus pop-ups, but I was still unable to run antivirus/antimalware programs, etc. I followed a number of the instructions I found online:

Rkill never seemed to find anything, although it appeared to run when I tried it at various times.

TDSS killer identified & removed rootkit.win32.ZAccess.e and suspicious hidden windows file 3203397148:380922017.exe. The most recent scan showed nothing.

If I first run TDSS killer, I can then reboot & run Malwarebytes once (an improvement over MBAM only running for 2-15 seconds before stopping if I don't use TDSS killer first). Unless I re-install each time I use it, I can't run Malwarebytes more than once. It will let me do one scan and then tell me I don't have permissions if I try to open it again.

Malwarebytes identified that 3203397148:380922017.exe file as Backdoor.0Access. It found/removed multiple instances of Backdoor.OAccess, as well as spyware.passwords.xgen. It also identified & removed a problematic registry key at HKEY\local machine\current user\services\control services\current control set\icf6efbe\, The most recent scan showed nothing.

SuperAntiSpyware found nothing on a complete scan.

Where I'm at now is that I can use TDSS killer & Malwarebytes to remove the problem files above, and they appear gone... but then they reappear. Computer performance makes it clear that the problem persists (and is probably worse).

The computer has suddenly gotten extremely slow. If I reboot in normal (not safe with networking) mode, I get several odd new pop-ups. One relates to Windows messenger (which had been & should should be disabled). Another says it has updates from HP agent (which had also previously been disabled). One tells me I need to align my printer cartridges(?). Another appears as a Windows Installer box preparing some installation and wants to configure SonicDVD. It also automatically launches AOL, although AOL is not supposed to load on startup. And my antivirus software (Acronis) remains disabled. I can't run it; nor can I uninstall it, reinstall it, update it nor do anything else with it. I also got an error message that NVCPL.DLL process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Obviously the computer remains lousy with whatever is in there that doesn't want to be found/removed. I'm very grateful for any help you can offer. I'm no computer whiz, and this has me overwhelmed & frustrated. THANK YOU for taking the time to look at this.

Hello KCNY,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Watch Topic.I suggest you click it and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

  • Finally, please reply using the ADD REPLY button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Please download DummyCreator.zip and unzip it.
  • Run the tool.
  • Copy and paste the following into the edit box:

    C:\WINDOWS\3203397148
  • Press Create button and post the content of the Result.txt.

    Important: Restart the computer.

2.
Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.6.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.5.6.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

3.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply::
result.txt
TdssKiller log
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

You're right; I was using the older version of TDSS killer. I downloaded & ran the newer version, and no infection was found.

Fireman,

I ran ComboFix. It told me I have rootkit.zeroaccess in the TCP/IP stack and calls that a particularly difficult infection. So far, I don't have internet access. ComboFix warned me of that possibility. I've been rebooting with no luck. I get a message: Wireless Network Connection 2 - This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources.

The computer is still throwing weird pop-ups at me on reboot. It wants me to align printer cartridges. Windows installer says its preparing to install something. Windows wants to configure Sonic myDVD. It tells me that DISCover socket installation failed. And I get a "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" for HP Digital Media Archive. Amusingly, Windows also posts an alert that it doesn't think I have antivirus software running. Sometimes you just have to laugh!

Now what? Thank you so much for helping me.

No, no luck. I'm cut off from the internet (so I can't post that ComboFix log).

(I'm obviously using a different computer to post here)

Hello,

With this type of infection we are now seeing this and sometimes it can be corrected. But I need to see the COmbofix log and also need to be able to run others tools to see whats going on. Do you have a USB Flash Drive you can use to transfer stuff back and forth from machine to machine?

Fireman,

Thank you for bearing with me. The affected computer isn't recognizing the USB port I was using, but it worked with a different USB port.

We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Yes, Verizon fios is how I had been connecting to the internet. I don't have any sort of installation disc from them, but I'll see if I can find something online.

I don't have a Windows XP installation disc. The computer came with it pre-installed.

I'll check to see if I can burn cds, and I do the steps you described with the CFscript as soon as I can. It might take until Monday, but don't think I've abandoned the thread. Thank you for hanging in there & trying to help me make the best of this ugliness!

Click here to download Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.
  • Double click on the file you just downloaded and let it install.
  • It will install to your desktop.
  • After that leave what is selected and put a check next to My Computer.
  • Click on the option that says Threat Detection and change it to Disinfect => Do not select, delete if disinfection fails.
  • Then click on Start Scan.
  • Before it is done it may prompt for action regardless of the setting so choose skip if prompted.
  • When the scan is done no log will be produced.
  • Click on the bottom where it says Report to open the report.
  • Then highlight of of the items found by using ctrl + a on your keyboard to select all or use your mouse to select all then right click and choose copy.
  • This will copy the items that it found to the clipboard you can then open notepad (go to start then run then type in notepad) and choose paste to paste the contents into Notepad.
  • You can save this on the desktop.
  • Post the contents of the document in your next reply.

You also gave me the same Combofix log. It should be Combofix2.txt

Fireman,

That IS the new ComboFix log. If you look at the top, the first one says:
ComboFix 11-09-09.03 - HP_Administrator 09/09/2011
and the one I just posted says:
ComboFix 11-09-09.03 - HP_Administrator 09/12/2011.

In answer to a previous question, I cannot burn cds. I get a message that the drive is not accessible.

You had mentioned that I'd have to reinstall a number of programs, including Acronis. It won't let me.

I'll have that Kaspersky report for you soon.

Thank you!
