Posted 08 September 2011 - 02:42 AM

I'm running Windows XP Professional w/ Service Pack 3 and Avast's free anti-virus software.

In the last week or so, my web browser has been either not loading some pages at all, or loading them and then shortly thereafter redirecting to different advertising pages/gambling sites/link-filled sites/blank pages. Sometimes a new browser window or tab opens to a page like this, too. This happens in both Firefox and Internet Explorer .

I've also been unable to connect to some sites - ex. Eset Nod32's online virus scan, the Microsoft Windows Update site, Spbybot S&D developer/download page. Also, some software won't install or run properly - ex. Trend Micro Housecall online scan, Spybot S&D.

I ran McAfee Stinger, and it's search came up clean. I tried to run a Panda AV scan, but it stalls.

Any ideas on what this may be and how to fix it?

Thanks.

My logs:

DDS: I turned off my antivirus's script blocker, but DDS would not complete. It froze the laptop every time I ran it.

Hi

The redirect issues are still there (from google results, but also when trying to open links from other websites). I'm also unable to connect to certain sites, such as Microsoft Update, Eset.com.

Here is the log:

Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"

  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

I shut down all running programs, shut off Avast and the Windows firewall, and then ran Combofix. It installed the Recovery Console, restarted the computer, and then began to scan. It ran for about an hour before I realized it had stalled and frozen the system. I rebooted and tried to run it again, but it stalled after 40 minutes. Does it normally take this long to run (or is the 10-20 minutes estimate what I should go by when determining if it stalled)?

Thanks again for your help.

Hello

I want you to run this tool for me next.

tdsskiller:

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

I couldn't download from the Kaspersky link. Here is the error msg: "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\tdsskiller.exe could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator." So, I loaded it to a thumb drive instead.

Here is the log:

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

Hi Gringo,

I ran Combofix in safe mode and let it go for about an hour before figuring it had stalled. I had to uninstall Avast before running Combofix since Combofix fix kept telling me my AV was still running though it I had disabled it as you outlined.

The link wouldn't connect, so I used a USB drive to get the program on to the pc. On install, it asked to download avast's virus definitions. I okayed it, but it failed to get the definitions, saying "avast engine download error." Here is the scan log:

Re-Run aswMBR

  • Click Scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the FIXMBR button
  • There is a slight pause after clicking the 'Fix' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.
  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.
