Hello everyone. Lately I have been having some minor issues with my computer, such as random error codes for Windows Update as well as some mysterious traffic I picked up on my Zone Alarm firewall and although I have done scans using AVG, Spybot, and Malwarebytes, I have yet to find any malware on my computer. I just want to be absolutely sure I can rule out malware as the cause for any of the above situations, especially since I do a considerable amount of online banking and stuff of that kind of sensitive nature.

In case it concerns anyone, my computer is an Alienware M11xR2 running on Windows 7 64 bit SP1.

Here is my HijackThis Log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/417722 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

hi moshpitdweller90,

Are a updated

AVG, Spybot, and Malwarebytes

coming up clean after a scan? Any signs of malware, see link. Many normal processes can be pretty chatty, can you explain the traffic in ZA or post a log from it.

How Can I Reduce My Risk to Malware?

Hey there. Yeah, those scanners keep coming up clean. I will post a ZA firewall log from a date in which I noticed unusual activity though I don't know how helpful it will be:

The red text are what I think are unusual, they are outgoing to the following websites in order from top to bottom:
e3821.c.akameiedge
pmw90687.surfcanyon.com
pmw90687.surfcanyon.com
api.mywot.com (which is a site I do recognize so actually isn't of concern).

As for the ZA program log, the only program that shouldn't be trying to access the internet that has is called ZMatrix, a desktop customization programming that I downloaded from CNet. I figured it was safe since it was from CNet plus it was uploaded in 2003, so any viruses/spyware it did have would be recognized by my security software(s).

those scanners keep coming up clean

ok good. Yeah, the ZA log looks pretty harmless. Does this look familiar at all, maybe checking for updates?
This: (ZA Toolbar: Conduit Engine) Years ago conduit was a well known provider of spyware. Looks like its part of your ZA toolbar. Look here. and here

Sure enough there is the Conduit Engine folder sitting in my Programs File...if it is part of my ZA toolbar I assumed it downloaded along with ZA. Since ZA is a not a malicious program and I downloaded it from CNet, is this definitely some sort of malware?

If it is, it may be responsible for an issue I've been having with Firefox, when I try to bookmark something I can't edit any of the text in the bookmarking fields...although that has been happening since July and I didn't download ZA until about two weeks ago which is where I'm assuming I got this Conduit Engine thing from.

Thanks for your help!

Edit:
I did some research, looks like some people had success getting rid of Conduit via Revo Uninstaller. I'll try that a little later today before attempting to manually remove it.

Using Revo Uninstaller I completely deleted both the Conduit and Conduit Engine files from my computer. Is this the only sign of Malware that is evident in my HJT log? My problems with Firefox and Windows Update still persist...

Additionally I will post my DDS scan since it was requested by the bot a while ago:

yes the ZA toolbar is provided by conduit. The toolbar may have been a optional install when you installed ZA. More and more software is coming with useless toolbars that are checked by default. The ASK toolbar is a big one. Is it malware for sure? probably not unless other vendors start removing it also during a scan. I just recognized the name conduit from years ago and personally stay clear of toolbars. Do you get a error code with Windows update?
MS Security Essentils is a AV and you also have AVG. Two AV on a machine can cause problems as well as tie up system resources. Only need one per computer.

Before installing Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend that you uninstall other antivirus software already running on your PC. Running more than one antivirus program at the same time can potentially cause conflicts that affect PC performance.

Yes, I get error codes 64c and 0x80070715 when trying to install updates for Microsoft Silverlight, Microsoft Security Essentials, and Zune. The thing about all these programs is that they will not update nor will they uninstall, which is actually why I am stuck with MSE on this computer even though I have AVG. The log claims MSE is enabled but it isn't, upon start up I get an error message saying it cannot be opened and it never starts up. I get the following message for all three when I attempt to either update, reinstall, or uninstall them:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable."

It typically asks for the location of a .msi package which even though I will browse and attempt to open an appropriate one it will still say it isn't a valid package for installing/uninstalling the program and the setup will quit.

The main reason malware was my original concern was because this problem originally started out with just the Silverlight update but has now spread to MSE and Zune, although MSE is the only one of the three programs that won't function at all (the other two function, just can't be updated/uninstalled/reinstalled). When the unusual behavior started spreading to other Microsoft programs I began to think that it may have been some sort of virus.

I have done many Google searches and looked in many forums for help and tried many Fix Its and other solutions with no success.

Again, thanks for all your help.

By the way, I have done a log of the failed Microsoft Silverlight Update. If you determined that this issue is not a malware one, obviously I should post this log and pursue this issue in another forum. If so, can you point me to the correct one?

As far as I can tell you seem to be malware free. Have you seen this install/uninstall troubleshooter from MS, here?.
EDIT: never mind looks like you have probably tried it already?

That's exactly what I was trying to avoid having to do, especially since I don't have a system image so I would need to start from scratch by downloading all my drivers and everything. However, I am glad to say I finally found a solution for my problems.

In all the google searches I've done several times the Windows Installer Clean Up tool was always used as a solution however it is no longer available to download from Microsoft or many other sites. However I finally found an old version of it on majorgeeks.com which cleaned up all three programs. I'm upset that it took me this long to figure out where I could find the program, but late is better than never.

I want to thank you for all your help, I really appreciated you taking the time to read my posts and help me out. And of course I am very glad this was never a malware issue
